Safety index

Safety at night:Moderate

Baños has an overall relaxed and friendly atmosphere during the night hours. However, like any urban setting, it's best to remain cautious and alert. Stick to the main streets where there are people present and lighting is good. Avoid going to secluded areas after dark, especially when by yourself. While the chances of experiencing crime or threatening encounters are relatively low, portraying awareness and confidence can act as a deterrent.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Baños, including the buses and taxis, is generally safe. Buses are usually crowded but are an inexpensive way to travel. Taxis are also available, with drivers typically respectful and reliable. Always remember to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings as minor thefts can occur on public transportation, as is the case in many locations around the world.

Street harassment:Low

Baños is a popular tourist destination and generally safe for solo female travelers. Street harassment is not excessively high but like any tourist area, it can occur. More often than not, locals are respectful and helpful, particularly in daylight hours. However, as always, it's important to stay aware of your surroundings and maintain common sense precautions.

Petty crimes:Moderate

While Baños is generally considered safe for travelers, occasional incidents of pickpocketing or theft can occur, especially in crowded tourist areas and public transportation. Always keep an eye on your belongings, use taxi services at night and refrain from flashing expensive items like cameras or smartphones in public.

Tap water:Unsafe

In Baños, it is not recommended to drink directly from the tap. While the water is technically treated, there can be inconsistencies in sanitation processes and standards may differ from those in more developed countries. Many travelers have reported instances of travel-related illnesses traced back to local tap water. To stay safe, it's best to either buy bottled water or treat the water yourself using filtration systems or purification tablets.

Solo travel experience

I felt completely safe walking there at night. Besides typical tourist activities like the trip to Amazon Puyo, biking on the Ruti de las Cascadas route and having fun at rooftop bars, I really enjoyed spending time eating at local restaurants and street stalls. I highly recommend the local specialty: choclo mote con cuero.
