Is Trinidad and Tobago Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Trinidad and Tobago can be a fascinating destination with its rich culture and beautiful scenery, but does require vigilance in terms of safety, particularly for solo female travelers. While many locals are friendly and helpful, reports of crime, including against tourists and in areas frequented by tourists, are a concern. It's advisable to avoid isolated or poorly lit areas, especially at night, and always take precautions when taking local transportation. Do not display flashy valuables and always maintain a high level of situational awareness. Stay in reputable accommodations and use licensed taxis where possible. Remember, every individual's experience may vary, but these are general precautions to bear in mind for a safer journey.

How safe is Trinidad and Tobago?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Trinidad and Tobago's safety level depends greatly on the specific area within the country. However, due to prevalent criminal activities, it is generally not recommended for women to walk alone at night. Even in well-lit areas or popular nightlife spots, there's an increased risk of theft and other crimes, making it advisable to navigate with caution and at best, avoid unnecessary night walks. Always be vigilant and aware of your surroundings to better ensure your safety.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Trinidad and Tobago is relatively reliable. Buses, taxis, and ferries can be used for transportation. Taxis generally offer a safer option, though unregistered taxis should be avoided. Buses, especially those on major routes, are usually secure. However, it's crucial to avoid traveling alone late at night or in quiet places. Being aware of your surroundings and taking precautions, such as not displaying expensive items, will increase your safety on public transportation.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

In Trinidad and Tobago, the approach towards women in public is social, and unfortunately, this sometimes transforms into unwanted attention. You may occasionally encounter some catcalling or unwelcome comments, especially in larger, crowded areas. However, wearing modest clothing and being aware of your surroundings can help reduce these instances. It's also wise to avoid walking alone at night in less busy areas. Most Trinbagonians are highly respectful and friendly, so while you may face some street harassment, it's not a regular experience for all visitors.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Trinidad and Tobago experiences an average level of petty crimes such as pickpocketing, especially in crowded areas and public transports. Well-traveled areas and tourist spots have been reported to face such issues. However, staying alert, avoiding display of wealth and taking general precautions should help keeping these experiences at bay.

Trinidad and Tobago

There are fairly a high number of murders. You feel as though now you have to walk and constantly keep looking over your shoulder. The crime situation has worsened over the years. Everyday, there's something new and the people are very fearful for their lives.

Is Trinidad and Tobago worth visiting?

Trinidad & Tobago, Solo travel

I was in Tobago as a solo traveler. I recommend it, but it's worth doing some research on where to go and what to do beforehand. I stayed in the quietest seaside village of Castara, where I rented a car and an apartment, which served as my base for daily visits/activities, such as a day-long boat trip or birdwatching hikes in the rainforest. I visited the forts of British colonizers, as well as former cocoa plantations, which have now been turned into museums and cooperatives, botanical gardens, and some waterfalls on the island. The food and admission tickets for sightseeing were relatively cheap.
