The surrounding areas are relatively safe and friendly but I would recommend going with either a guide or local. The people are welcoming and easy to get along with, but don't walk after dark especially in the town centre or any highly congested areas. Be wary and Have fun!
Posted: April 20, 2025Summary: Visit but be wise and know where the hot spots are located. Trinidad and Tobago is a beautiful country with a rich cultural and friendly fun loving people. However the country is plagued by gang violence and there are certain areas that are considered generally unsafe. Tobago is much safer and cleaner in general. Most persons visit during the Carnival festivities which I would definitely recommend! The flora and fauna id also very noteworthy.
Posted: April 13, 2025I would not recommend going into high crime areas or areas with low traffic. I would not recommend walking around alone when it's dark. Try to stay in a group or pair up with someone at all times. Overall, it's an okay country in regard to safety. Just don't do things you wouldn't do in your own country, and it should be fine. Speak to locals and ask questions they would answer honestly and advise you on where to go and what to do. We're usually very friendly.

I reside on the smaller island, Tobago. I generally feel very safe. There are many times I would go to bed without closing windows for natural ventilation, forget house keys on the door, leave my vehicle unlocked, and my home was never disturbed. I am a woman, so everywhere I go, no matter how safe it may be, I worry about being harassed or kidnapped, so my worry about that isn't because it's an issue here. The people are friendly and ready to assist. You obviously won't be walking around with large sums of money at any point as that is a safety issue. All in all, as a citizen, I feel safe.

It is fairly safe, as it is home to the local university. However, many drug addicts and vagrants live in the area. I will always recommend walking in groups and not walking or traveling late at night.
Posted: January 20, 2025It's not very safe but there are a lot of things you can do to be and stay safe. I won't recommend taking pictures free transport at night. Be careful about where you stay. Connect with a local and ask questions about where you plan to stay or visit.
Posted: January 19, 2025It’s like a diamond in the rough. I’ve lived in Guyana prior to moving here and it gives a homey feel similar to the safest part of Guyana. Easy transport, all utilities available. As well as entertainment.
Posted: July 4, 2024There are fairly a high number of murders. You feel as though now you have to walk and constantly keep looking over your shoulder. The crime situation has worsened over the years. Everyday, there's something new and the people are very fearful for their lives.
