How safe is Karachi?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Karachi is a large city with a bustling nightlife. However, like many other large cities, it has its share of safety concerns. While the central, more populated areas might feel relatively secure due to the presence of people and security personnel, it is advisable to avoid isolated and poorly lit places. Especially as a solo female traveler, it is recommended to refrain from walking alone at night. Public transport is also less reliable at these hours. Therefore, it's better to arrange for secure personal transport. Moreover, having a local contact or guide can add a layer of security.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Unsafe

Public transportation in Karachi comprises mainly of minibuses and rickshaws. For a solo female traveler, it's a challenging and noisy mode of travel, often characterized by overcrowding and lack of order. While locals use it frequently, the lack of organization, personal space, and overall standards of cleanliness may pose a discomfort. Additionally, the language barrier and non-standardized fares might be a potential issue. However, despite the relative safety concern, many locals are helpful and personal incidents are relatively rare. Consider using alternative modes of transportation, such as private transport services which are safer, cleaner, and slightly more expensive.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:High

In Karachi, it's unfortunately not uncommon for females to experience some level of street harassment, such as unwelcome comments, ogling, or following. It is advisable to dress conservatively, be aware of your surroundings, and avoid being alone in isolated areas. However, remember that the majority of locals are respectful and friendly. Always trust your instincts and don't hesitate to ask for help if you ever feel uncomfortable.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

In Karachi, petty crimes such as pickpocketing, purse-snatching, and theft are relatively common, especially in crowded areas and public transportation. Some neighborhoods may also pose a higher risk. Always be vigilant, use secured modes of transportation, and keep your valuables hidden and secure. Educate yourself on the safer parts of the city and avoid venturing out alone after dark if possible.

I gave a pretty poor rating to my city but it is not all bad and I would like to elaborate why. The threat varies from area to area and on how you are living your life. I am a 21 year old woman and I go to and from university in an auto alone almost everyday and I feel 100% safe. I always return around 8-9pm which is pretty dark and do not try to cover myself or anything due to any fears. This is because majority of the auto drivers in Karachi have been providing this service for women who are not able to drive their own cars for DECADES and most of them try to make the passengers feel safe. Then, safety also depends on where you are traveling to and what route you are taking. That is something that only an experienced local can guide you about so feel free to ask. Karachi doesn't really have anything worth seeing tbh, but if you want to come for a specific cause then don't worry, it is very liveable and pre-dominantly safe.

Karachi is not safe alone for girls, but if you have a person or in a group, it’s fairly safe. I would recommend travelling in groups of friends, and enjoy DHA and other nearby places. And would love to advise on where to visit.
