Is Pakistan Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

While Pakistan may be an intriguing spot for solo female travelers due to its rich culture and stunning landscapes, it's vital to exercise caution. Though violent crime is not common against tourists, incidents of harassment can occur, particularly for women. It's highly recommended to respect local customs, covering up with local attire and avoid venturing out at night alone. Moreover, it's safer to travel to well-known tourist spots, and avoid politically or militarily sensitive areas. However, many women have traveled solo in Pakistan and have had positive experiences. The key is to be aware of your surroundings, be respectful of the local culture, and take common-sense precautions to safeguard your security.

How safe is Pakistan?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Travelling through Pakistan can be an intriguing experience, yet it might not be considered very safe for a solo female traveler to walk alone at night. Crime rates may be higher during the night and societal norms might not allow women to be out alone after dark in some areas. It's better to plan your traveling during daylight hours and stay in well-populated areas whenever possible.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Unsafe

Public transportation in Pakistan is widely available but it might not be the safest option for solo female travelers. Women-only transportation is limited and not usually available in many regions. Large crowds and lack of personal space makes it uncomfortable and sometimes even unsafe. Local trains and buses can often be overcrowded, and sexual harassment in public places is not uncommon. For a safer option, consider booking a ride with a reputable taxi company or ride-sharing services like Uber or Careem. Be sure to check the vehicle and driver's details before boarding, and share your live location and details of your driver with someone you trust. Always exercise caution and avoid traveling during late hours.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Similar to many other places worldwide, street harassment can be an issue in Pakistan although not overly pervasive. It's critical to understand that experiences can vary significantly. There are areas, particularly in larger cities, where instances of unwanted attention or catcalling might occur. However, often this is not seen as aggressive as in other countries but rather discomforting. Locals are quite helpful when it comes to foreigners, and they will offer assistance if you face any challenges. It's best to dress modestly, avoiding attention and respecting local customs, as Pakistan is predominantly a conservative country. Always have a clear sense of your route and keep a confident demeanor when navigating through the street. This may reduce the occasion of any potential harassment.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Pakistan has a moderate amount of petty crime such as pickpocketing and theft, particularly in crowded places or tourist hotspots. However, most of the time, locals are very friendly and helpful, making it a relatively safe destination for solo female travelers. Precautionary measures like not displaying wealth openly can reduce the risk of being targeted.

Chitral, Group travel

Last year I went to Chitral (the Kalash valley) to be more exact and sad to report but the government has to do a lot to promote safe solo travel for women. I attended the chilam Joshi festival and although I went with a travel group, still at times I felt a bit unsafe amongst the locals. Also, the festival has become very commercialised... I wouldn't going as a solo woman traveller but women can go with a group.

Islamabad, Group travel

There were a lot of things to do and it was easier on the budget — I felt safe but also keep in mind I traveled with a group and also speak the local language. From hiking to shopping to eating, there were always many things to do and I had the best time

Pakistan, Couple travel

Pakistan is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. The people are incredibly polite, everyone wants to take a selfie, the food is delicious, the prices are low, and most importantly, we felt very safe there. It's a place where tourism is not fully developed yet, which is a huge plus, because everything is still so natural. Nothing is specially prepared for tourists.

Lahore

It’s very safe city. Everyone is being kind and sweet. I’ve been living in this city for 29 years now. And not for once I have gone through harassment, kidnapping or robbery. So I believe it’s a very safe city

Karachi

I gave a pretty poor rating to my city but it is not all bad and I would like to elaborate why. The threat varies from area to area and on how you are living your life. I am a 21 year old woman and I go to and from university in an auto alone almost everyday and I feel 100% safe. I always return around 8-9pm which is pretty dark and do not try to cover myself or anything due to any fears. This is because majority of the auto drivers in Karachi have been providing this service for women who are not able to drive their own cars for DECADES and most of them try to make the passengers feel safe. Then, safety also depends on where you are traveling to and what route you are taking. That is something that only an experienced local can guide you about so feel free to ask. Karachi doesn't really have anything worth seeing tbh, but if you want to come for a specific cause then don't worry, it is very liveable and pre-dominantly safe.

Meet locals in Pakistan

About Me

Helooo, I'm Jasia aka JJ. I'm a bachelor student of tourism and hospitality management ( yes I'm studying exactly what we're all here for). I'm also a national golfer in Pakistan. Although golf ain't my kinda game, very slow and focused but hey... I'm good at it, and I do enjoy it, and that's the only sport my parents allowed me to persue professionally. (Dad's a golfer dah). I love reading books which are obviously far from reality, mostly fantasy and ROM COMS. And I'm an adrenaline junky. I wanna skydive, scubadive, bungee jump and all sorts of that stuff. I've done solo paragliding though. Lastly, I'm an introvert with limited social energy. I think I am fun and lively with people but for a limited time. My social battery runs out very quickly.
