Rotorua is generally safe for travellers, there’s are various community activities and nature walks, etc. However, as a European myself I don’t find the same level of safety as I would in most European cities and especially as a woman. Mostly it’s due to town’s layout, lack of public transport infrastructure and needing a car to get to places, minimal pedestrian walkways, etc. I would say mostly nothing to worry about for those with common sense and taking precautions :)
Posted: December 26, 2024Rotorua is a place where one neighbourhood can be so lovely and tight but but if you turn a corner you could suddenly be surrounded by gangs, police and drug/alcohol abuse. The public transport isn’t too unsafe however if you are disabled it is a vulnerable place to be with a presence of discrimination. I would not be comfortable walking around Rotorua after dark by myself.

A Latvian enjoying local Redwoods, clearwater lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Not into mountain biking (yet), but do enjoy wild swimming and cold dips, disc golf (newest hobby), a bit of rock climbing and road trips. Learning to be more graceful on a SUP and looking for an exploration buddy to find glow worms in the lake caves.
