How safe is Tampico?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Tampico, despite being an attractive tourist destination, has some safety issues, especially at night. While local authorities strive to keep tourists safe, it's generally not recommended to walk alone at night. It's always important to stay in well-lit, busy areas and preferably use reliable transportation services instead of walking. Make sure your accommodation is in a safe area, and always be vigilant about your surroundings.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Tampico is relatively safe in the daytime, with buses and taxis being regularly available. However, it's recommended to use official, registered taxis. During the night, it's advisable to use a taxi service booked through a trustworthy hotel or restaurant. As with any other city, it's crucial to keep an eye on your belongings since pickpocketing can occur. Furthermore, keep your destinations and route in mind as some areas might be less safe than others.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Tampico, experiences a lower level of street harassment compared to other cities. While it is always advisable to respect local customs, blend in and maintain your wits about you, solo female travelers shouldn't expect a high level of harassment on the streets here. However, as with all places, it's always good to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Tampico, as in any other city, travelers should be aware of opportunistic crimes such as pickpocketing, purse snatching, and theft from vehicles, particularly in crowded areas and tourist hotspots. Although violent crime is less common, it's always wise to stay vigilant, keep your belongings secure, and avoid displaying expensive items. Safety measures such as pre-booking transport rather than hailing taxis on the street can also help to minimize risk.

There is a little bit of tourism here but there are mostly locals that live here. At night I don’t like to go out alone walking but driving to a store and back is fine. I do get catcalled and looks when walking down the street so that can be uncomfortable

This is a small city, you can get to places very easily and fast. Overall, the safety is moderate. There are times when you might not feel completely safe, especially at night, there is some risk to either get robbed or hurt. My advice is to always have some company, or at least share your location with someone when you go out.
