Is Machida safe for solo female travelers?

Machida, like most parts of Japan, is generally safe for solo female travelers. The city has a good low crime rate and well-lit streets. However, it's still advisable to exercise common sense precautions such as avoiding walking alone late at night in deserted places and always keeping your belongings secure. Japanese people are generally very helpful and the police are also very responsive.
