Is Okinawa safe for solo female travelers?

Okinawa is generally very safe for solo female travelers. The crime rate is very low, and people are typically respectful and helpful. It's typical of Japan's overall reputation for safety. Public transportation is reliable, and even during the night hours, places are well-lit and populated. However, as with any travel scenario, standard precautions should still be taken such as avoiding less busy areas late at night and always having a rudimentary understanding of the local language.

Solo travel

Super safe place for solo travel If you love ocean Recommend ridding scooter across the island to enjoy the sea view alone the way. The northern part of the island has more nature scenery, however there’s no public transportation. Definitely will want to visit again

Solo travel

Okinawa is an island and has beautiful natural views. The food is not expensive. There is a huge aquarium and Solutional cave. I have stayed there for 4 days. i suggest you can stay longer. The American Village is recommended.

A lot of Okinawa is very very safe. American soldiers statistically tend to be the least safe part of staying here. Always be vigilant, but safety in Okinawa feels very respectful. One Okinawa was drunk flirting with me recently and his guy friends told him not to touch me when he started tapping my shoulder—I felt looked out for.

About me

Hi! I’m an American Expat currently living in Okinawa, Japan. I moved here in Nov 2024 from Italy, where I had been living for the 4 years prior. I live with my partner, Francisco, whom is also an expat that I met in Italy 3 years ago (edit: he moved to Tokyo, but will periodically visit me in Okinawa—you may or may not meet him). Together, we have a passion for traveling and really enjoying the culture of the countries we travel and stay in. I think we have traveled to 35 countries together now (I lost count)! I also live with my two lovely feline lifelines, Luna and Gio. They are quite the adventure cats. What I love most about travel is the perspective it provides and the enamor and awe one can experience through it. I want to do what I can to facilitate that experience for other travelers and find like minded free spirits that are just passing through.
