Is Kanazawa safe for solo female travelers?

Kanazawa, like many places in Japan, is highly safe for solo female travelers. The crime rate is significantly low and the people are traditionally respectful and helpful. As with any location, sensible precautions such as avoiding deserted areas at night and always letting someone know where you are going, are advisable. Public transportation and local amenities are easily accessible and reliable.

Solo travel

It felt safe but very confusing. There are a lot of tourist but nothing is in English, the suica card doesn’t work on buses and no one tells you that 😭 sometimes it feels like you are being judged just because you are a tourist, and to go through that as a solo traveler is not very welcoming and nice…

It’s a great place but you do feel a little anxious around bars as a solo traveler imo… not in a creepy way, it’s just hard to get to know people and find other girls to hang out with. But it is a great place

Kanazawa is a small city in Ishikawa Prefecture of Japan. The environment is very safe, even if you are walking solo at night. The criminal rate is generally very low. If you happen to lost your wallet or bag, contact nearest police office and many times it wil be returned.

About me

Hello! I’m a resident of Kanazawa hoping to do an exchange with someone in Tokyo. A few times a year I like to visit Tokyo to visit friends and go to special events like Comiket, Magical Mirai and Hardcore Tanoshi so it would be nice to stay with someone close to the central city. Specifically Aug 15-17 and Aug 29-31 and then I’ll be in Tokyo from 18-20 too but I’m intending to camp. Kanazawa is little Kyoto so we have geisha districts and one of the best gardens in the country. During the winter we’re blanketed in snow and there’s a direct bus to 2 different ski lodges from the main station. During the summer we have Noto beaches. My home is a kominka (machiya) built during the 1920’s within 15 minutes of Higashi Chaya Gai and I live here with my cat. The location is very convenient with a bus stop to the station 2 minutes away (10 minutes to the station by 100yen bus) and the bus stop to major locations a 5-7 minute walk away. Within a 5 minute walk there’s a grocery store, family restaurants, and conbini. I rent out rooms to tourists but will black out dates for you to come stay. It’s a private room with either futon or bed depending on availability. Of course you can use amenities like the kitchen, washer, etc. The main rule is quiet time after 22:00. よろしくお願いたします
