Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Ubud has a reputation for being fairly safe, even at night. Although, like any place around the world, it's not completely free from crime. Streets are usually quite lively with both locals and tourists until late hours. However, avoid unlit and deserted areas. As a solo female traveler, always stay aware of your surroundings, especially walking alone at night.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Ubud is generally safe and reliable for solo female travelers. Bemos, which are local minibuses, and taxis, are commonly used methods of public transportation. The drivers are usually respectful and helpful to tourists. However, be cautious during peak hours as pickpocketing can occur. Another important consideration is to agree on taxi fares beforehand to avoid being overcharged.

Street harassment:Low

Ubud is generally considered safe and respectful towards solo female travelers. With its deeply ingrained customs and culture, street harassment is not a common occurrence. However, like any other destination, it's important to always stay alert and aware of surroundings, especially at night.

Petty crimes:Low

Ubud, generally enjoys a low rate of petty crimes such as pickpocketing or purse snatching, mostly due to its community-focused culture and the high respect for law and order. However, it's sensible to use the same precautions you would in any other tourist destination. This includes avoiding unlit areas at night and not flashing expensive items publicly. As always, vigilance and common sense are your best prevention tools.

Tap water:Very unsafe

Drinking tap water directly in Ubud, is not recommended. The water treatment process may not be up to the standard as in the Western countries, making it carry potential health risks for foreign visitors. It's better to rely on bottled water for drinking, and use tap water only for cleaning or bathing.

Solo travel experience

Ubud has been my favourite destination in Bali. It's not on the coast and tends to ti be more rainy, however, the vibe is fantastic, especially if you're into mindful living. There are plenty of yoga classes, vegan foods, and massage centres. The hostels there were new and well kept. The monkey forest is definitely worth a visit!
