I went in January with my best friend, and we rented an airbnb 6 blocks from the city center. One disadvantage is that the city is on a hill so it was a long way back to our place every time we went eating or out of the city. We felt really safe, although you have to be careful with the cars, we always kept an eye on our stuff. We moved around by bus (they called them “colectivos”) and for that we bought the card that allows you to move around. We bought one for the both of us and we had to put money in it. We went to colonia suiza one day, and the next day we went to cerro campanario and from there we went to different beaches, all by bus and it was quite comfortable. The buses have a schedule so we had to keep that in mind. In cerro campanario we went on the “teleferico” and moved around on the top (some of the pictures are from the top) and if you want to go to cerro otto there is a specific bus that will take you there. We ate mainly at restaurants or dinners and it was not as expensive as we thought but we did not eat cheap either. We tried to enjoy ourselves as much as possible. We also took a tour to go to Cerro Tronador, which was amazing and they pick you up before 9 am and you get back to your place at around 6 pm. Overall, great experience, it was totally affordable and it can be budget friendly if you cook your own meals, but the food there is great.
