Riga is not a criminal city in its simple sense, but if you pay attention to men, you will notice that a very large number of them have been/are in jail for robbery/violence/drug distribution. Everyone has at least one acquaintance who is involved with drugs. It is not very safe to walk alone at night in certain neighborhoods, because that is where the marginalized layer of society gathers. Especially in the summer. Girls need to carefully watch what they drink in clubs and just as carefully watch the behavior of guys in large companies. There are lists of clubs that girls are better off not going to.
Posted: June 15, 2025It's a nice place, there are lots of things to see and do, explore the country and know the culture. I would recommend going to touristic places, it'll be more beautiful, more informational and I'd say even safer.
Posted: June 11, 2025I would say riga is quite safe, there are neighborhoods that are not that pleasant but i wouldn’t worry about. If you are in the old town at Friday or Saturday then maybe I would watch out because of all the drunk people but still the police is patrolling

Some districts outside of the city centre are less safe and you should be more cautios in the later hours (like Ķengarags, Purciems, Maskavas forštate), but overall I feel very safe walking alone even at night in Riga.

Riga is pretty safe, but racism is super big problem. If you are dark skinned lady, please don’t travel solo to Latvia. It would be safer if you would travel with someone together (for example two besties). And actually now there is another problem which recently occurred society - some men poison drinks in one specific club in Old Town of Riga so be careful.
Posted: May 28, 2025I would say the Latvia in general is really safe place to be, I have never doubted or thought I could get kidnapped or robbed the crime level here is really low, of course you always have to be aware but Riga is safe place. And i would say Latvia is a very welcoming country that invites foreign nationals to live, explore, and thrive.

While in Riga I stayed in the Blue Bird Hostel in the old city. The city felt pretty safe to walk around, although I didn't stay out very late. I really recommend the Art Nouveau neighborhood. I'm not aware of any museums since I had no time to visit one but simply walking around is very pleasant

I went Latvia for Erasmus and it was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. I’ve never felt safe and peaceful anywhere. You can enjoy the clubs and even after 4 am you can walk to your place ALONE. I’ve done that many times and it’s really safe. The people are really friendly and open to new experiences. I was never bored. The only thing is in the winter it’s always snowing so if you don’t like I wouldn’t recommend but other than that everything was good
