Is Riga safe for solo female travelers?

Riga overall is considered quite safe for solo female travelers. Just like any other major city, it has areas that are very safe and some areas that one must be careful in, especially at night. The city center is well-lit and usually busy, providing a feeling of safety. Local people are generally friendly and helpful. However, always be aware of your surroundings and personal belongings. There are instances of pickpocketing especially in crowded and touristy areas.

Last week my friends and i went to travel Riga, Old Town. We really love the atmosphere, history, buildings and the culture. We visited the Christmas market for the first time in our lives. Even if the city was so cold we enjoyed so much.

Solo travel

While in Riga I stayed in the Blue Bird Hostel in the old city. The city felt pretty safe to walk around, although I didn't stay out very late. I really recommend the Art Nouveau neighborhood. I'm not aware of any museums since I had no time to visit one but simply walking around is very pleasant

I felt super safe! A very walkable city, and very few tourists! I stayed in Liberty Hotel, very good place for it's price. Close to McDonalds and the old town. The cakes taste weird 🙃 didn't experince any restaurant that i liked, so just kept to supermarkets

Family travel

I had a lovely time in Riga with my mom and grandma. We felt very safe, wherever we went. We saw the Stalin Tower, the old KGB museum (not for the faint hearted) and just walked around the old city. The city is absolutely beautiful with old architecture and fascinating sculptures. The food is amazing and cheap. Would recommend.

Solo travel

I felt very safe, the people were warm and helpful. They speak English well and most also speak Russian. No one bothered me, I wasn't worried about being robbed (like in Brussels or Barcelona). I recommend it.

Generally I feel safe in Riga. As always, avoid being alone during the night, but I don't follow that rule. Doesn't mean you shouldn't. Avoid Origo if you can. Old town is generally safe in my opinion, police is very responsive if anything.

The center is pretty much safe, so I would say you don’t have to worry at all. If we are talking about Ķengarags, Āgenskalns and other regions around the center, they are pretty unsafe, so I don’t recommend getting out there after dark.

Riga is not a criminal city in its simple sense, but if you pay attention to men, you will notice that a very large number of them have been/are in jail for robbery/violence/drug distribution. Everyone has at least one acquaintance who is involved with drugs. It is not very safe to walk alone at night in certain neighborhoods, because that is where the marginalized layer of society gathers. Especially in the summer. Girls need to carefully watch what they drink in clubs and just as carefully watch the behavior of guys in large companies. There are lists of clubs that girls are better off not going to.

Some districts outside of the city centre are less safe and you should be more cautios in the later hours (like Ķengarags, Purciems, Maskavas forštate), but overall I feel very safe walking alone even at night in Riga.

I would say the Latvia in general is really safe place to be, I have never doubted or thought I could get kidnapped or robbed the crime level here is really low, of course you always have to be aware but Riga is safe place. And i would say Latvia is a very welcoming country that invites foreign nationals to live, explore, and thrive.

About me

Hey there! I’m a blend of code and curiosity, a frontend developer by day, a sunset chaser, language explorer, and spontaneous adventure seeker by heart 😁 Born in Ukraine, based in Riga, Latvia 🇱🇻, but my soul is usually somewhere between the sea breeze and a freshly coffee 😋. I’m always hunting for cozy cafes and hidden foodie gems - the kind of places that serve flavor and a little magic. I love dancing at night, planning dream trips (even if just in my notes app), and getting lost in deep convos or a good book. The sea recharges me, sunsets slow me down. And whether it’s grabbing a cocktail, watching thrillers, or jumping on a last-minute trip - I’m all in if the vibe is right. Let’s connect and make life a bit more cinematic. 🌅✨🍸
