Safety:Safe

Colombo, as the capital city of Sri Lanka, has a relatively high safety record. However, as with any travel destination, it's critical for solo female travelers to maintain a level of vigilance. Harassment and pickpocketing can occasionally occur, particularly in crowded areas. Therefore, it's urged to keep an eye on your belongings, avoid isolated areas after dark, and try to blend in with the local culture as much as possible. Taxis and public transport are generally safe, but it's always best to go with a reputed company or book rides through hotel reception desks. Sri Lankans are typically friendly and helpful, making your journey more enjoyable and less stressful. Just remember to pay attention to your surroundings and actions to guarantee your safety.

Transport:Easy

Colombo is generally safe and navigable for solo female travelers. The city's layout is fairly straightforward, and public transportation options are ample, including taxis, tuk-tuks and buses. Local signage is often in English, which makes things easier. However, be wary of pickpockets in crowded areas and practice caution during nighttime. Common sense and vigilance are your best tools.

Things to do:Interesting

Colombo is a vibrant city that offers a diverse array of things to do and see. From historical attractions like the National Museum and Colombo Fort, to scenic locations like Galle Face Green and Beira Lake. The city is also home to various markets where you can explore local cuisine and clothes, like Petah Market. The chic and cosmopolitan neighbourhoods, such as Cinnamon Gardens, are packed with boutique stores, restaurants, and galleries. As for the safety of female solo travelers, Sri Lanka is generally safe but, as with any destination, it's always important to exercise caution and common sense.

Food:Above average

Colombo's culinary scene is quite diverse and impressive. You can find a range of food options, from local Sri Lankan to Indian, Chinese, and even Western cuisine. The street food culture here is popular, offering an array of delicious and budget-friendly meals. Sri Lankan food is known for its spices and flavors, with many dishes incorporating coconut and seafood. However, for those less adventurous with food, there are plenty of international chains in the city too.

Budget:Affordable

Colombo is quite budget-friendly. Accommodation, even at boutique hotels, can be found for reasonable prices. Local cuisines are not just affordable, but also delicious and diverse. Public transportation such as tuk-tuks and buses are inexpensive and also an excellent and authentic way to explore the city. Expensive activities and attractions exist but generally, the cost of living and traveling in Colombo is very manageable.

Solo travel experience

Not too much to do here, but feels safe. Locals are friendly and helpful. I just went to the museums which was nice. Not many other eu/UK travellers which tbh was quite nice. I only spent a day here and it was relaxing (but hot). Felt safe and secure at all times really

Local tips

I often hear from travelers that Colombo is their least favorite place in Sri Lanka. Of course it’s a tough choice when you compete with the beautiful beaches, mountains and temples. However, if you didn’t have time to explore other places in Sri Lanka and end up having to spend a few days in Colombo, make the most of it. Colombo has lots of culture and good food. The city is well connected to the rest of the country and is easily accessible by public transport albeit being crowded. The weather is hot and humid throughout the year, and pleasant during the rainy season. If you really want to explore the city, step out and walk around, talk to locals and match the city’s energy.
