It's also important to note that the city is equipped with an efficient and responsive local police system, enhancing the overall security. Therefore, it's a great choice for female travelers exploring alone.

Matsumoto is relatively easy to navigate. Though not every local speaks English, the signs are often bilingual which simplifies understanding. There is an abundance of walking and cycling paths. Public transportation is efficient, and taxis are available, although more costly. Do bear in mind that residential and less touristy areas might require a bit more efforts to navigate.

Furthermore, small townships like Azumino offer charming wasabi farms which you can explore. However, keep in mind that Matsumoto, while rich in character, doesn't possess the bustling nightlife or extensive shopping options of Tokyo or Osaka.

Is Matsumoto worth visiting?

Solo travel

Went to Matsumoto on a solo travel for 2 nights. It is a laidback city, with beautiful backdrop of the Japanese Alps. I used a bicycle to move around and visit the old castle. It is easy to navigate and safe. The train and bus station is in the center of town and easy to access. Lots of cafes and eateries, shops and bakeries. Wonderful city as a base for a trip to Kamikochi or Nagano.
