Safety:Safe

While Dominican Republic can be a captivating destination with stunning beaches and vibrant culture, it is advised to take certain precautions as a solo female traveler. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night, as incidents of pickpocketing and mugging have been reported. Public transport safety standards can be lower than expected and you may encounter aggressive street vendors. However, majority of your visit should be incident-free if precautions are taken. It is important to respect local customs and stay in tourist-friendly areas.

Transport:Moderate

Traveling around Dominican Republic may present moderate difficulty. While there are plenty of options like buses, taxis, and motoconchos (motorbike taxis), they might not be totally reliable or comfortable. Navigating the urban areas can pose challenges due to traffic congestion, chaotic driving behaviors and occasional language barriers. In more remote areas, the condition of roads can be poor, making travel slow and a bit complicated. However, with some determination and careful planning, getting around is doable.

Things to do:Interesting

Dominican Republic is a wonderful amalgamation of sparkling beaches, scenic landscapes, historical sites, and rich culture. There's no shortage of activities for a solo female traveler. You can indulge in water sports, relax on the stunning coastlines, or explore the colonial architecture in Santo Domingo. Adventurous travelers can explore the lush green national parks or hike to Pico Duarte, the highest peak in the Caribbean.

Food:Above average

The Dominican Republic offers a rich culinary experience influenced by African, Taíno, and Spanish cuisines. The nation's tropical climate brings forth a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and meats which are used to create an array of mouthwatering dishes. Staples include rice, beans and meat, often served with tropical fruits. Seafood is particularly excellent near the coast. There are also street food options for adventurous eaters, but always ensure hygiene standards to prevent possible food poisoning. There are options for vegetarians but it's less diverse than for meat eaters. Be aware, the food may not agree with everyone's digestive system initially. As you adapt, you'll likely grow to enjoy the flavors of Dominican cuisine.

Budget:Affordable

The Dominican Republic is relatively budget-friendly for solo travelers. Food, transportation, and accommodations can be inexpensive, especially outside of touristy areas. However, popular spots and activities can be pricier. The cost of living and traveling is typically less than in North America or Western Europe, allowing you to experience scenic beaches, historic sites, and immersive cultural experiences with many cost-saving options available.

Couple travel experience

We went for our honeymoon. It was a last minute change as Covid was just beginning in Asia, which was our original destination. We stayed at an all inclusive resort which was good. I am not huge fan of staying in the same place for a week. We did take several excursions, one of my favorite was a local experience. We went cocoa farm and had fresh cocoa and saw how it is farmed. Second stop was a two room school house (I’m a teacher) so that was very impactful for me. Last stop was a waterfall and river experience. That was my favorite day of the whole week. 🙂

Family travel experience

I travelled with my 2 kids and my father. It was a direct flight Madrid - Punta Cana. We went to a resort, Occidental Caribe, all inclusive at Arena Gorda Beach. We went Saona Island and made an excursion with boogies and zip lines

Group travel experience

The photos are from my traveling Journal as I backpacked the phone free throughout the island. This experience introduced me to a new way of traveling. Walking around not touristy places and rather diving into untouched wild nature: deep green forests, transparent turquoise blue beaches and jungles where i truly felt human, just a girl alone in the inmentisy of.....earth. It was amazing. I am vegan and food wise it was actually cheaper to fit myself through pasta, bread and rice, and fruit. Also regarding fruit I would highly highly recommend trying mangoes from Dominican Republic. And cacao. Regarding safety it's a tricky topic I found locals to be very welcoming and overall happy especially towards me as a Spanish and therefore someone they could speak Spanish with. But it's also important to acknowledge the political and safety and therefore poverty and how that can affect safe interactions with locals.

Solo travel experience

I just returned from a solo trip to the Dominican Republic and it was incredible. Everyone in my family was so scared, but I was very safe in my Airbnb. The locals were super nice, and the food was amazing.

There are a lot of beautiful beaches, I didn't like Santo Domingo, the streets were like abandoned and it's dangerous People were good and happy but just when it was about tourism, the food was delicious

Solo travel experience

I absolutely love this country. The beaches, weather, people, culture, food, and music are amazing. I never felt unsafe. I stayed in Santo Domingo, Juan Dolio, La Romana, and Punta Cana. I apply the same precautions wherever I go. Without flashy clothes or jewelry. I walk decisively and with confidence.
