Safety:Moderate

São Paulo is a large city and like all large cities, it has areas that are safer and others that are less safe. It is advisable to stay alert, especially after dark, and avoid less crowded areas. Public transportation is generally safe, but it's better to avoid it during less busy times. Many locals speak English, which can be helpful. Crime rates vary, so staying aware of your surroundings, keeping valuables out of sight, and making clear travel plans can help ensure your safety. Always trust your instincts as they are your best guide.

Transport:Moderate

São Paulo is a massive city with a rather complex public transportation system. Due to traffic congestion, travel can be somewhat slow, but once you become familiar with the subway and bus routes, you can manage reasonably well. That being said, safety could be an issue especially at night, and language might be a barrier if you don't speak Portuguese. There is a wide range of ride-sharing apps available for easier navigation, and English is spoken in many of the tourist-oriented spots. Overall, it’s a bustling city with plenty to offer.

Things to do:Interesting

São Paulo, is a bustling metropolis teeming with diverse cultures, arts scenes, and globally-influenced cuisine. Sightseeing options are abundant with numerous museums such as the São Paulo Museum of Art and the Museum of Portuguese Language. The city also boasts of stunning architecture, like the Martinelli Building, and urban green spaces, such as Ibirapuera Park. For shopping enthusiasts, Paulista Avenue and Oscar Freire Street won't disappoint. Foodies will relish a wide palette of flavors in the city's multiple food markets and varied restaurants. However, the city may be overwhelming for some due to its scale and high-paced lifestyle, and safety can be a concern during the night or in certain districts.

Food:Excellent

The food in São Paulo offers an incredible range of flavors and a variety of cuisines from all over the world. The city boasts a diverse range of options such as traditional Brazilian dishes, Japanese, Italian, Middle Eastern and many vegan-friendly alternatives. The street food is also worth trying, offering a local and authentic culinary experience. Confectioneries and cafes also offer great beverages and an array of delicious sweets and pastries.

Budget:Moderate

São Paulo, can be considered moderately budget-friendly. Accommodation options range from budget hostels to high-end hotels, offering flexibility for different budgets. Local food is quite affordable and tasty - try the street food! Public transportation is reasonably priced and extensive, while many attractions are free or low cost. However, some experiences, travel within the city, and certain dining and nightlife options can push your budget higher.

Solo travel experience

I traveled last year for vacation. I went alone for seven days. I got around using the metro and buses - to and from the airport, as well as for long-distance trips to Rio de Janeiro. I love this city, there is a lot to see and many beautiful places.

Solo travel experience

I spent a few days alone in São Paulo. The biggest struggle for me was Portuguese. I cycled around the city, which was really great, and I also discovered three beaches on a walking tour. I was there during the carnival and I would recommend everyone to experience the carnival at least once in their life. I spent the whole day walking around various Blocos de Rua (street carnivals) and always felt very safe.

Local tips

I recommend staying in areas such as Bela Vista, Aclimação, and Vergueiro. They are close to the metro station and are safe areas where you can find affordable accommodation. If you are going to the city center, I recommend doing it during the day. If you carry a backpack in the metro, it's better to wear it on the front. On Avenida Paulista, avoid using your phone in any situation, and Uber is very safe. São Paulo is a beautiful city, although it has many homeless people.
