Solo Female Travel in Botswana

Nestled in the heart of Southern Africa, Botswana is a strikingly scenic place blessed with a rich tapestry of life and diverse geography. Known for its distinctive flat landscape, the majority of Botswana is covered by the arid beauty of the Kalahari Desert, yet it also holds within its bounds the lush, wildlife-rich oasis of Okavango Delta. This inland delta is a natural wonder that attracts wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe with its large concentrations of elephants, buffalos, lions and a myriad other African species. Apart from its natural allure, the culturally rich Botswana is renowned for the distinct ethnic traditions of its population, such as the San Bushmen, who are among the oldest populations in Africa. With its intriguing mix of culture, exotic wildlife, and extraordinary landscapes, Botswana personifies the soul of Africa for those seeking unrivaled safari experiences and authentic African allure.

Safety:Very safe

Botswana is considered relatively safe for solo female travelers. Crime rates are much lower compared to other regional countries and the locals are friendly and helpful. However, as with any travel, some precautions such as avoiding walking alone at night and being aware of personal belongings are necessary.

Transport:Moderate

While Botswana is relatively friendly for solo female travelers, the geographic vastness can make getting around a bit challenging. Navigating unfamiliar public buses or shared taxis might not be the easiest task, and while renting a car can be an option, it is suggested only if you're comfortable with long distances and 4-wheel-drive vehicles. Walking can also be a good option in city centers. However, the country's richness in wildlife and safaris along with warm locals make the journey worthwhile.

Things to do:Interesting

Botswana offers a rich diversity of activities especially for nature and wildlife lovers. It's home to the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park where you can come face-to-face with an incredible array of wildlife in their natural habitat through safari game drives and boat tours. Moreover, there are unique landscapes to explore such as the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans and Tsodilo Hills containing ancient rock art. The tranquility and the opportunities to engage with the local culture and heritage also make Botswana a captivating place to visit.

Food:Above average

Food in Botswana offers a good variety, featuring both traditional and international cuisines. You can enjoy dishes prepared with fresh local ingredients, including meat, grains, and vegetables. The standard of food presentation and taste have met widespread traveler expectations. From the traditional sesame-studded bread to the meat stew, Botswana provides a delicious journey through its gastronomic landscape. However, you may find less diversity compared to culinary-rich countries.

Budget:Moderate

Botswana offers a mix of luxury and budget-friendly options. While activities like safari tours can be pricey, the cost of accommodations, meals, and local transport are reasonably affordable. Therefore, the cost of travel widely varies depending on the type of trip. It's possible to tailor your journey to suit a moderate budget, making it a middle-of-the-line destination in terms of price.

Is Botswana worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

I traveled all over Botswana as a solo woman. It's a very safe country. Public transportation is somewhat scarce, but it's doable as long as you don't want to stray too far from the main roads.
