Is Iran Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Iran is generally safe regarding personal security. Iranian people are known for their hospitality and often go out of their way to help tourists. You are unlikely to deal with serious crimes. However, Iran is a strict Islamic Republic and female travelers must adhere to local dress codes such as wearing headscarves and loose-fitting clothes. Also, solo female travelers may face risks regarding cultural challenges and potential unwanted attention. Always prioritize good judgement and assertiveness.

How safe is Iran?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Iran has a reputation for being a generally safe country, with local people often going out of their way to help foreigners. However, it is still more cautious for a solo female traveler to avoid walking alone at night in less crowded and poorly lit areas. It is always a good idea to use trusted transportation options and be aware of surroundings. Cultural norms are also important to respect and being out alone late at night might attract unwanted attention. Always trust your instincts and stay safe.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Iran, including buses, metro, and taxis, are generally safe and reliable to use. Many Iranian women and tourists use them daily. However, problems like heavy traffic and few lines that could lead to crowding are common. Always be aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant, especially while on crowded systems. It's common for women in Iran to share taxis, but it's also perfectly acceptable to politely decline and wait for the next one if you're uncomfortable in any situation.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

While visiting Iran, you might occasionally be at the receiving end of some unsolicited attention or curious glances, largely due to foreign visitors being a relatively uncommon sight in certain regions. However, most instances generally don't escalate beyond verbal engagement. Iranian society is traditionally respectful, but as a solo female traveler, taking precautions such as dressing modestly in accordance with local customs, avoiding deserted areas late at night, and being assertive can help mitigate any potential for street harassment.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

While Iran is generally considered safe for solo female travelers, petty crimes like pickpocketing can occur especially in crowded areas and public transportation. However, compared to many other destinations, these occurrences are relatively low. One must still exercise usual precaution and vigilance.

Tabriz, Family travel

We stayed at suit hotels in baron avak st. It was clean and the reception and staffs were perfect. There are many historical houses and museum there. Kabud mosque is fab. You can feel the art of iranian in every buildings. People are great, you can go to different restaurant and cafes. Also there is night life in central places. Winter is not good season for trip the best one is summer and spring cause it is a cold city. People talk in azeri language. If you are Turkish or azerbaijan you feel you are in your hometown my friends.

Iran, Solo travel

Hello, Regarding the political situation, Iran is also safe for women to travel. I first went alone but soon met other people and had the best experience. The culture, the food, the countryside—it was really great. I highly recommend Hormuz Island in the very south!

Iran, Solo travel

A few years ago, I went on a solo trip to Iran and absolutely loved it. I had a great time, meeting wonderful fellow travellers and locals, visiting some of the most beautiful places I've ever been to, and experiencing an incredibly rich and interesting culture. However, I felt very safe there.

Iran, Solo travel

I went on a solo trip and I can honestly say that it was the most beautiful, safest, and enjoyable country I ever visited. I've been to many places, but this was exceptional. The food, music, architecture, and history captivated me. The people of Iran were incredibly hospitable and nice. I highly recommend it.

Tehran

I mean, honestly it is not the best but surely,,, better than new york, Los Angeles, New Orleans, etc. I guess. Some towns and neighborhoods are not safe to walk in at night but some others are cool.

About Me

Hello dear friends, I’m planning to travel to the UAE on June 14th, with the goal of finding a job. If anyone has experience or information in this area and can guide me, I’d truly appreciate it. I graduated in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, I have two years of work experience in the Health Information Technology (HIT) department of the surgery unit at a public hospital. and I’m interested in working in kindergartens, schools, or — if possible — offices, organizations, or companies. I’m currently learning English, but I’m not fluent yet. Thank you in advance for your support and attention.
