How safe is Lome?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Lome is a city with diverse experiences but safety at night may vary. It is generally not recommended to walk alone at night especially in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas. Just like in any other city, there might be incidences of pickpocketing and petty crime. It's advisable to take a taxi if you need to travel at night, and always be aware of your surroundings. Precautions like these can help ensure your experience is safe and enjoyable.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Lome is relatively safe but can be chaotic. The most common form of public transport is motorbike taxis known as 'Zemidjans'. They are usually safe but the safety largely depends on the individual driver's skills and respect for traffic laws. Buses are also available though they tend to get very crowded. Be aware of your belongings at all times as pickpocketing, especially on crowded buses, can occur. Always agree on a price before getting on a 'Zemidjan' and try to travel during daylight hours. It's a fascinating experience, but some caution is needed.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Lome, it is relatively rare to encounter overt street harassment. The locals are often friendly and respectful towards visitors. However, you might occasionally come across vendors who can be a little pushy to sell their products. But outright inappropriate comments or conduct are less common.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Lome has a moderate risk level in terms of petty crimes. This means that incidents such as pickpocketing, purse-snatching, and minor thefts do occur. Travelers are always advised to be cautious with their belongings, stay vigilant in crowded places and avoid displaying wealth or expensive gadgets in public.

Solo travel

I recently traveled to Lomé, Togo, and had a mixed but overall positive experience. While some locals were incredibly nice and helpful, I did encounter a few who expected payment for their assistance. However, the nonprofit organization I visited during my humanitarian efforts, was exceptionally friendly and accommodating, making my time there rewarding.
