Is Girona Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Girona is generally considered to be quite safe for solo female travelers. Spanish people are friendly and hospitable, and crime rates are relatively low. However, like anywhere, it's important to remain cautious, especially at night or in less populated areas. There are also frequent police patrols, making the city feel secure. As with any travel, basic safety guidelines such as being aware of your surroundings at all times, keeping an eye on your belongings, and avoiding less crowded areas at night should be followed.

How safe is Girona?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Girona is generally a safe city, even at night. Like in any city, it's important to be aware of your surroundings, but violent crime is relatively rare here. The old town and main tourist areas are well-lit and usually quite lively until late. It should be safe to walk alone at night, although as always, use your judgment and stay in well-populated areas.

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Girona, is generally safe for solo female travelers. The city has an efficient public transport system that includes trains, buses, bikes, and taxis, which are regulated and reliable. Standard safety protocols such as CCTV, proper lighting, and security checks are usually in place. However, like any heavily trafficked area, it might be important to stay alert for pickpockets or petty criminals, especially during peak times and on crowded buses or trains.

Is Girona worth visiting?

Solo travel

The historical center is quite small and compact, and the attractions consist of one moderately interesting museum and several interesting churches - nothing is for free. I walked every old street with ancient buildings, visited all the sights and finished in less than 4 hours.

Family travel

I went to this beautiful little town with my mom for easter, not knowing what to expect. However this city has suprised me a lot. The people there were so friendly and I was very impressed by all the little food places. Especially the Apero on the market square was one of my favourite experiences! The city is remarkable with all the small streets, colourful houses and greenery. A highlight was the easter procession through the whole town

Is Girona safe for women?

Catalonia, in general, is not dangerous. However, as a girl, I feel scared at night if I have to return alone. Things can always happen, but as a general rule, I have never been mugged or robbed, just as I have almost never felt violated.

About Me

Hi, my name is Ellie and I’m from a village half way between Manchester and Liverpool in the UK. I live in New Hampshire, US from Sept- early May for university. I currently study environmental science and international politics 🇬🇧🇺🇸 I’m an avid trail runner and I love to explore places via running solo or finding a running group there- I especially love coastal and mountain runs. My favourite way to relax is to sit in nature to read romance novels or write poetry and I will never say no to a cappuccino, hot chocolate or matcha at a cute cafe. I love trying local food- my favourite cuisines are Greek (I love mousaka), Brazilian, Japanese teppanyaki, Mexican, Italian and traditional Indian. I’m not a drinker but I do love a good jazz bar, a lively restaurant atmosphere with good music, or even a party with karaoke. I also love to be active- whether that’s rock climbing, water-sports, badminton or swimming in the sea. I’m always up for an adventure and my favourite trips have been the most craziest such as quad biking in the Turkish desert, running up Rocacorba in Girona. I’m 1/4 polish (although my grandmother forgot how to speak polish from a young age) and I definitely want to visit at some point and maybe even look into learning the language and applying for a polish passport in the future 🇵🇱. I love learning languages but sometimes I may be a little nervous to speak them due to my dyslexia even though I can understand mostly. I am also hoping to go on an inter-railing trip through Europe at some point: I have a few places on my bucket list so far: the UN in Geneva, the Dolomites.
