No homeless people in the streets and people are nice and helpful. Safe to stay here, even safe to sleep in a car as many backpackers do it. Overall safe as in most cities in New Zealand. Felt never unsafe

Whangarei is fairly safe when using common sense! Don’t walk alone past 10pm, everywhere during day time is fine to explore. Most crimes aren’t gender targeted - you will not feel uncomfortable walking around as a woman.
