Is Dunedin & The Otago Peninsula safe for solo female travelers?

As a solo female traveler, you are likely to feel very safe in Dunedin & The Otago Peninsula in New Zealand. New Zealand, in general, is well-known for its low crime rates and friendly locals. Dunedin, specifically, is a charming city with a slower, relaxed pace of life, and it is also home to a diverse student population. But as with all travel, it is important to exercise usual precautions - don't walk alone late at night in deserted areas, keep your valuables secured, be mindful of your surroundings and keep in touch with friends or family so that they know your whereabouts. Despite this, the overall safety level is quite high and should make for a comfortable and secure trip for any solo female traveler.

How safe is Dunedin & The Otago Peninsula for women?

I have never had a problem as a woman in Dunedin. Neither have a lot of my women friends. There is a big drinking culture and therefore boys seem to start a few fights, but from what I’ve seen it’s only with other boys. There are a few break ins during student holidays as robbers think flats will be empty. Everyone is very caring and wouldn’t want a lady walking home alone anyway as they would want to just make friends with them. Be weary but in my opinion more of aggression towards other males.
