Is Uruapan Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

While Uruapan itself boasts beautiful scenery, local markets and a lot of cultural and historical attractions, it is important to note that it is located in the state of Michoacán which continually experiences a higher degree of drug cartel activity and violent crime rates in comparison to some other states in Mexico. This does not prohibit traveling to Uruapan, but it would be advisable to be vigilant at all times, avoid travelling after dark and always stick to highly populated areas. Precautions such as not openly displaying wealth or expensive items is a good practice. It would also be recommended to let someone know of your travel plans and stay regularly in contact.

Is Uruapan safe for women?

Uruapan and the surrounding region (like Pátzcuaro, Zirahuén, and Morelia) offer incredible nature, culture, and artisanal traditions. While news outlets often highlight safety issues related to cartel activity, this mostly impacts specific local dynamics rather than everyday travelers or tourists. You can comfortably visit top sights, travel by bus, or drive during daylight hours—I do so regularly myself. Petty crime or street robbery isn’t the main issue here compared to larger cities....

About me

Hey! I’m Maria. I split my time between art, design, and being outside. I love nature, road trips, plants, and discovering local crafts wherever I go. Also a big fan of home cooking and exploring new places. Always open to meeting cool people, sharing good food, and finding new spots to visit. ✨
