Is Madagascar Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

While Madagascar offers stunning landscapes and unique wildlife, navigating its rough terrains can be challenging, especially for solo female travelers. Reports of petty crime and occasional muggings exist, especially in urban areas. In addition, lack of access to basic services in many parts and poor road conditions can also pose safety issues. Always ensure that you take guided tours and avoid unpopulated areas at night.

How safe is Madagascar?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

While Madagascar is a beautiful destination, it is recommended that solo female travelers avoid walking alone at night, particularly in isolated areas or in the capital city of Antananarivo. Street lighting is limited and crime rates, including theft and muggings, tend to increase after dark. Public transportation also tends to stop operating during late-night hours. It's better to arrange for a reputable taxi or a private vehicle if you need to go out at night. Always be aware of your surroundings and take common precautions as you would in any other place.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Unsafe

Public transportation in Madagascar, mainly taxis-brousse (bush taxis) and rickshaws, is quite uncertain due to their poor maintenance. Vehicles are often overcrowded and uncomfortable, posing a risk in terms of road safety. Furthermore, theft within taxis-brousse, although not common, can occur. The drivers also tend to drive aggressively and do not strictly follow traffic regulations. This makes it complicated to ensure a secure journey, especially for solo female travelers who may want to emphasize safety and comfort. You should be prepared for potential difficulties and always keep an eye on your personal belongings.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Madagascar, majority of the locals are respectful and friendly. While you may get the occasional stare due to curiosity, especially in the rural areas, and might be approached for business or solicitations in city areas, the level of street harassment is generally low. It is always important to carry yourself with confidence and be aware of your surroundings while respecting local customs and traditions.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

Madagascar experiences a moderate level of petty crimes, such as pickpocketing, especially in crowded areas and public transportation. Tourists can be a particular target in large cities. However, cautionary measures like keeping valuable items hidden, not carrying large amounts of cash and being vigilant in crowded places can dramatically decrease the chances of being a victim.

Madagascar, Solo travel

I spent 2.5 month is madagascar and still didnt see it all!! I loved it so so much and was a proper adventure. The country is not easy to travel at all but is so much more rewarding. I hitched, got on the local taxi brusse, got boats ect... and everything runs super slow and in malagsy terms mora mora. I travelled the entire length of the wou try but didnt see much of the east and west coast. The country varies so so much from lush rainforest, to pristine tropical beaches, to desert mountains! Its a country that you could spend years in and still wouldnt see it all! The people are so lovely, chill and always happy to help. The culture varies throughout but is a fusion of african, Southern aisan and European traits making it historically and on every other front so amazing and intresting! I had the best time here but my highlights where the spontaneous unplanned days I spent with locals!
