Is Cameroon Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Traveling to Cameroon as a solo female can come with a few safety concerns. Many parts of the country struggle with social unrest, violent crime, and terrorism, which make it a relatively risky destination. It's also worth considering the cultural conservatism of certain areas where it may be challenging for solo women travelers. Extra precaution in avoiding remote areas or travelling at night is definitely advisable. Always research the current situation before planning your trip and ensure you stay informed while there, preferring guided tours or registered taxis over venturing alone.

How safe is Cameroon?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Cameroon, while rich in cultural experiences, can be challenging to navigate safely at night due to factors such as inadequate street lighting, poor road conditions, and elevated crime rates particularly in larger cities. Walking alone is not recommended, as travelers, especially women, can become targets of opportunistic crime. It is best to plan your day so that you are not out alone after dark, and always use reliable transportation means if you must be out at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Cameroon includes buses, shared taxis, and trains. Generally, it isn't completely unsafe but does have its challenges. Buses can be crowded and sometimes drive at unsafe speeds, and shared taxis often fit many people into a small space. Theft can occur, particularly in crowded settings, so always keep your belongings close. Trains are generally safer and more comfortable but their schedules can be unpredictable. As with any form of public transportation anywhere in the world, it's important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings to keep yourself safe.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

While traveling in Cameroon, many solo female travelers have reported some levels of street harassment. It can mostly involve staring, catcalling, or unwanted compliments, especially in crowded areas. However, it doesn't often escalate to physical aggression. It's advised to dress modestly, avoid unwanted attention, and be cautious especially at night. Public interactions are generally respectful but it's always wise to maintain cautious vigilance.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

Petty crimes like pickpocketing, bag snatching, and minor scams are relatively common in Cameroon, especially in urban areas and tourist hotspots. It's important to stay vigilant, keep your personal belongings secure at all times, and avoid traveling to isolated areas alone. Be cautious and aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places where opportunistic criminals may be operating.

Is Cameroon safe for women?

Douala

Not that bad. Douala is most of time afin and good vibe place as long as you watch your self a bit carefully. Also in the night you should not walk alone in the streets. The better is to call a car for your movings.
