Is Bosnia and Herzegovina safe for solo female travelers?

Bosnia and Herzegovina has generally safe neighborhoods, especially in tourist-populated areas. Street crime, such as pickpocketing and purse snatching, is relatively low. However, it's recommended that you stay cautious as a solo female traveler. Make sure you are aware of your surroundings at all times, especially at night and in less crowded areas. Use common sense when catching taxis and where possible, book through a reputable company. In terms of cultural respect, it's always best to dress modestly to avoid unwanted attention. Lastly, be aware of land mines in rural areas from the recent war.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Solo travel

I spent one week in Bosnia and Herzegovina mid September 2025. I stayed a couple of days in Sarajevo for city sightseeing and the rest hiking on the mountains: Prenj, Treskavica, Lukomir hike, Trebevic. I totally recommend!! Mountains are mezmerising, especially Prenj. People are extremely hospitable, friendly and polite. I felt totally safe as solo female traveller all the time during my stay. A special mention: I stayed the last two nights of my trip in the village of Umoljani, the accommodation is called Koliba Umoljani. Owners are so warm hearted and their breakfast is out of this...

Was travelling with friends, first on the countryside and then in Sarajevo. You can see mountains surrounding the city, Burek bakeries on almost every corner and one must visit a Kafana, it’s wild but absolutely worth it! (;

I felt safe, we ate at Karuzo and I higly recommend that (ecpecially for vegans) it changed my life. I recommed going to yellow fortress when sun goes down and listening minaret calls. Tunnel of hope was touching.

Metković

In my city it’s completely normal for women to walk around safely. People here may look tough or direct at first, but they’re actually very generous, helpful, and kind once you talk to them. It’s a place where locals look out for each other and make travelers feel welcome. I love meeting new people and sharing the real, warm side of my city.

Sarajevo

sarajevo as the capital town doesnt have crime, at all in the main parts of the town. just be safe when crossing roads and stay away from interacting with drunk strangers because car crashes and danger might be often. but there is violence which is random. all u have to do is watch out at night. trains are open till 12pm.

Kakanj

i think it's and overall very safe town, because its not so big and there aren't too many unknown people living here (its like everyone knows everyone). The crime isnt very often although it happens sometimes.
