Ohrid, located in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, is a remarkable city steeped in the culture and history of the Balkans. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between stunning mountains on one side and the sparkling waters of Lake Ohrid on the other, is often referred to as the 'Jerusalem of the Balkans' because of its historical significance and religious importance. Known for its spectacular Byzantine-style architecture, it is home to a staggering array of churches, the most renowned being the St. John at Kaneo, perched above the lake. Ohrid's archaeological treasures, ancient theaters, and beautiful cobbled streets invite travelers to step back in time, while its vibrant festivals and thriving cafés offer a taste of contemporary Macedonian life.

North Macedonia, located in the southeastern region of Europe in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula, is a country widely recognized for its rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking natural landscapes. Renowned for its fascinating blend of ancient civilization and modern attractions, North Macedonia is proud of its capital city, Skopje, known for its fortresses, Ottoman-era architecture, and a Roman-era Aqueduct. Visitors are captivated by the beauty of Ohrid Lake, one of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes, offering stunning views that form an absolute must-see. The country is also celebrated for its vineyards and wineries, producing some of the finest wines in the Balkan region. Its multi-ethnic fabric weaves a tapestry of Orthodox Christian and Islamic cultures, evident in the country's traditions, cuisine, and the numerous churches and mosques that dot the landscape.

North Macedonia

When traveling to North Macedonia, it is advised by the United States, Canadian, and Australian governments to exercise normal safety and security precautions. Ensure to stay aware of your surroundings and follow the rules and regulations of the country for a safe travel experience.

Ohrid is beautiful, great for a 2 day stay. There are pay-as-you-wish day tours available to bring you around the Church of Saint John, the Ancient Macedonian theatre, Ohrid boardwalk etc. I also enjoyed the boat tour to St Naums, incredibly pretty. It’s a very small town though, so 2 days is more than enough. It is much more affordable than Western Europe, I paid around €7 for Old Town Hostel Ohrid and I ended up meeting some of the best people there! 

However, I am ethnically Chinese so I experienced 5 instances of racism in 3 days - eg. the local children would yell Ching Chong at me and other slurs while I was simply walking on the street. Sometimes I was followed by Romany children asking for money. Didn’t feel the safest here overall

I traveled alone to Ohrid and it was one of the best trips I have ever taken! I felt completely safe both at night and during the day, and people are incredibly friendly. As a solo female, I didn't face any inappropriate comments or strange looks.
