Is Argentina Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Argentina is generally a safe country, with friendly people and a rich culture to explore. However, as a solo female traveler, there might be areas that could be of concern. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching are prevalent in major cities and tourist destinations. There's a need to be cautious, especially when traveling alone at night. Positive common sense, avoidance of suspicious areas, and keeping your belongings secure would generally facilitate a safe journey.

How safe is Argentina?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Unsafe

Argentina, like many places, exhibits variable levels of safety in different areas and at different times. It's advised not to walk alone at night, particularly in secluded or lesser-known areas. While populated areas and tourist spots tend to be safer with occasional police patrols, it's always wise to stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings, and possibly avoid certain neighborhoods entirely after dark. Using a reliable service for transportation is a way to add an extra layer of safety to your travel, rather than walking alone.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Argentina's public transportation, which includes buses, subways and taxis, generally offers reasonable safety. Nonetheless, it is important to be cautious, especially during night hours or in less crowded areas. Always keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings. Incidents like pickpocketing and small thefts do occur in packed or congested areas. It's noteworthy that public transportation is frequently used and widely available in major cities of Argentina.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Argentina, particularly Buenos Aires, is generally known for its friendly atmosphere and nightlife, but it's also known for an undeniable level of socially acceptable catcalling. Local women and travelers alike occasionally experience unsolicited comments on the streets. It's essential to remain vigilant, especially when alone or during late hours.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:High

In popular tourist areas of Argentina, petty crimes like bag snatching, pickpocketing, and phone theft are quite common. Always stay vigilant in crowded areas and take care of your belongings. Do not show expensive jewelry or electronics openly. Be cautious in public transportation, as these crimes often happen there.

Puerto Iguazú, Solo travel

I imagine that I'll have far better food experiences if my budget was bigger, as Puerto Iguazu is a tourist town. The town itself is average, as it exists mainly as a jumping off point for the world-famous Iguazu Falls. It's spectacular, but entrance is also spendy. Safety wise, I would not walk around at night on my own, so I'm always feeling a bit hypervigilant to get back to the hostel before dark. Otherwise, people are nice and it seems fairly safe. Just observe usual safety precautions with your belongings and decisions.

Buenos Aires, Solo travel

Really one of the best places in LATAMand that coming from a Brazilian is a big deal, I love BA, the vibe, the food, everything you can experience, how international it is, the parties!!! And etc. I would be worried though of the price now because they're passing through a crisis.

I really liked Buenos Aires and overall it's pretty safe, just be informed about the different quarters of the city. You have to try neapolean style pizza which is one of the best I had and make sure to have fun

Ushuaia, Solo travel

It is really easy to visit a lot of places with Uber, buses or taxis. There are a lot of beautiful places to do trekking. I visited in summer, and it was almost 23 degrees. It is unusual there, so it was hot. The excursions are beautiful too and its National Park is really big, you'll need more than 1 day to visit it.

La Cumbrecita, Group travel

La Cumbresita is a lovely place to spend the day, walk, and go trekking to its waterfalls and explore its magical village. It is also recommended to visit the park, which can be reached for free by train from La Cumbresita to El Peñon.

Argentina, Couple travel

Felt super safe, and hitchhiking is a great option if you are looking for a low budget trip. Furthermore, I would absolutely recommend when in Buenos Aires to grab some lunch at any self service restaurant by the Obelisco. It is incredibly cheep and the food is great. People are stunningly beautiful and nice, everybody I met was extra welcoming. We spent 30 days traveling by and the route we did and I suggest is starting by the territorial “end” of the country and “climb up”. So, a suggestion would be: Ushuaia El Calafate Bariloche (mind visiting nearby places there, such as El Bolsón) Neuquén Mar del Plata Buenos Aires

I feel safe, but I also move around cautiously. I'm aware. Policemen are everywhere and their presence is reassuring. I live here and have never experienced anything dangerous. However, I stay observant and not distracted. Public transport is safe.
