Is Mar del Plata Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Mar del Plata is generally safe for solo female travelers, with most locals being friendly and welcoming. However, like any place, it has areas that are safer than others. It is important to keep an eye on personal belongings at all times, particularly on the beach and in crowded areas. In city centers, while safe, it is advised to avoid isolated areas after dark. Always use licensed taxis or trusted ride-sharing apps for transportation. Remember to use your common sense and trust your instincts. Generally, by being vigilant and taking standard precautionary measures, you should have a safe trip.

How safe is Mar del Plata?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Mar del Plata is a popular and bustling city with a vibrant nightlife. However, like any other city, it has areas that are more secure and others less so. Walking alone at night is not recommended, particularly in quieter or less illuminated areas. If you must go out, it is advisable to stay in well-populated areas, stick to main roads and take a reliable taxi service where possible. Always be aware of your surroundings and try to look confident, as this abates the likelihood of attracting unnecessary attention.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Mar del Plata's public transportation, primarily consisting of buses, is generally reliable and relatively safe to use. Like any city, it is always important to remain vigilant of your belongings and surroundings, particularly during busy hours. It is also advisable to avoid less frequented routes or times, if possible. Nonetheless, locals routinely use this mode of transport with little issue.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Mar del Plata is fairly safe with regards to street harassment for solo female travelers. While instances of catcalling or unwanted attention can occur, they are, in general, infrequent and not overly aggressive. As always, situations may vary and it's important to stay alert, but overall, many solo female travelers report feeling relatively comfortable walking around during both day and night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Mar del Plata generally enjoys a reputation of being a safe destination for solo female travelers. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag snatching are not uncommon in crowded areas and public transportation, but they are not highly prevalent. It is still important to remain vigilant and take basic precautions, like keeping your belongings close to you, especially in tourist-heavy areas and popular spots. However, violent crimes are relatively rare, and as long as you follow standard safety measures, you should have a hassle-free visit.

Is Mar del Plata worth visiting?

Couple travel

The ugliest restaurants were the highest quality. There are always traveling exhibits at El Torreón. It's not very safe at night near Playa Grande. The taxi drivers told us that it wasn't a good idea to use Cabify near the bus station because there's competition between them.
