Solo Female Travel in Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site situated in the northwestern corner of Zimbabwe, Africa, is renowned as one of the most majestic waterfalls in the world. Named after Queen Victoria by Scottish explorer David Livingstone, it is known locally as "Mosi-oa-Tunya" or "The Smoke That Thunders," due to the incredible heights from which the waters of the Zambezi River plummet into the batoka gorge, creating mystic clouds of mist and powerful, roaring sounds. This stunning natural wonder and the surrounding Zambezi National Park are home to a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, hippos, and diverse bird species, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers, adventurers, and those seeking a unique African travel experience.

Safety:Safe

Considering safety, Victoria Falls, despite being in Zimbabwe, is relatively safe for solo female travelers. It's a major tourist hotspot, meaning it's commonly patrolled and continually supervised to ensure visitor safety. A certain level of street harassment or petty crimes might occur, as with any other popular tourist destination, but these can generally be avoided with common travel safety practices, such as not showing off expensive belongings and avoiding less crowded areas at night. However, book your trips with reliable tour operators to avoid being caught in any potential scams.

Transport:Moderate

The ease of travel around Victoria Falls can be moderate on the scale. While the city itself is compact enough to navigate on foot, accessing some tourist attractions might require assistance. A mixture of local taxis, guided safaris and tours are available, often coordinated through accommodations. Despite the medium rating, the unique experiences available in this destination make any navigation difficulties worthwhile.

Things to do:Fascinating

Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is an excellent travel destination for those who love adventure and nature. Besides the breathtaking falls, there are plenty of activities to engage in. Enjoy white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and zip-lining for a thrilling experience. Moreover, you can also embark on a safari tour to spot a variety of wildlife, or take a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River. For more serene activities, walking safaris and bird watching are popular. Regardless of your preference, Victoria Falls offers an experience filled with memorable moments and picture-perfect scenery.

Food:Above average

Victoria Falls indeed has a rich variety of food to savor, ranging from traditional Zimbabwean dishes to international cuisines. You can taste the local delicacies like Sadza and Biltong, indulge in seafood or opt for vegetarian delicacies - the choice is wide. The freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the local chefs adds to the dining experience. Dessert lovers will also find a good selection to satisfy their cravings. However, the gourmet or ultra-unique food experiences might be a bit lacking, resulting in a small deduction in the score. Overall, the food scene is quite impressive, satisfying most palates.

Budget:Moderate

Victoria Falls resides in the middle range when it comes to budget-friendliness. Accommodation ranges from budget lodges to luxury resorts which cater to different spending thresholds. While entry to the falls is affordable, safari tours and adrenaline activities such as bungee jumping and white water rafting can be quite pricey. Eating out can also vary with a choice of affordable eateries and fine dining options. With proper planning and budget management, it's possible to have an enjoyable stay.

Is Victoria Falls worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

Victoria Falls is a tiny town, easy to stroll around. It only consists of a few short streets and of course a few hotels + a huge campsite with bungalows, which is fine if you're on a tight budget. I 100% recommend swimming in the Devil's Pool, at the top of the waterfall. I did it on the Zambia side, and it took me about 2 hours altogether, including a boat trip to Livingstone Island and a light meal served later on the island.
