Solo Female Travel in Uruguay

Nestled between colossal Brazil to the North, Argentina to the West, and the vast Atlantic Ocean to the East, Uruguay is a gem in South America's Southern Cone. This captivating country, the second smallest in South America, is known for its verdant interior and beach-lined coast with popular seaside resorts. Uruguay boasts vibrant cities including its capital, Montevideo, known for its Euro-style architecture, diverse culinary scene, and the iconic Rambla, a long seafront promenade. It is equally famed for its gaucho culture intact in the rural regions, representing the country's traditional lifestyle. Moreover, Uruguay is a haven for wine lovers, especially acclaimed for its rich, full-bodied Tannat wines – a reflection of its thriving viticulture.

Safety:Safe

Uruguay is relatively safe for solo female travelers. The country is known for its low crime rate compared to other Latin American countries. People are generally friendly, and public transportation is widely available. As always, it is important to remain vigilant, especially at night or in secluded areas. However, most travelers have uneventful trips and praise the welcoming nature of locals.

Transport:Easy

Uruguay is fairly easy to navigate. Most of the cities and towns, including the capital Montevideo, are fairly compact and walkable. There's a good public transportation system especially in the major cities. However, smaller towns and rural areas might present challenges in terms of transport. Furthermore, people are generally friendly and willing to help if asked for directions. Do note that not everyone speaks English, especially outside the tourist areas, which could be slightly problematic if you don't speak Spanish.

Things to do:Interesting

Uruguay is a delightful destination filled with numerous interesting activities and attractions. The nation's lively capital, Montevideo, boasts elegant theaters, fascinating museums, and a vibrant music scene. Foodies can relish Uruguayan cuisine at the local markets and eateries. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the country's national parks, picturesque coastline, and thermal springs. History buffs can explore the colonial architecture of the old city, Colonia del Sacramento. Emmanuel Dubourg overall, Uruguay is culturally intriguing, naturally beautiful, and reasonably safe for solo female travelers.

Food:Above average

Uruguayan cuisine offers a gratifying mix of flavors for every palate. Known for its high-quality beef, seafood dishes, and a blend of Spanish and Italian influences, it boasts a variety of options. The traditional asado barbecue or the hearty Chivito sandwich are must-tries. While vegetarian options are fewer, they are gradually becoming more commonplace. No matter what your preference, the cuisine of Uruguay welcomes you to a diverse journey of tastes and textures. Without any doubt, it scores high not only for its taste but also for its uniqueness and variety.

Budget:Moderate

Uruguay is moderately budget-friendly. Although it’s often cheaper than Western countries, it's considered one of the more expensive destinations in South America. Costs can vary depending on the season, location, and level of luxury. Hostels and budget eateries will save a few dollars, but public transportation is a bit pricier than neighboring countries. So it requires a bit of clever budgeting.

Is Uruguay worth visiting?

Family travel experience

I was in Uruguay in June and I spent five days in Montevideo with my parents. We took a one-day trip to the city of Colonia, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Montevideo reminded me of Madrid, both the landmarks and the people - conservative, nice and helpful. I took a really nice tango lesson, ate some amazing paella and walked along Las Ramblas. Uruguay is one of the more expensive countries in Latin America, especially when it comes to clothing and meals. However, our Airbnb was inexpensive, as were the taxis.
