Solo Female Travel in Senegal

Senegal, situated on the west coast of Africa, is a country known for its diverse culture, rich history, and warm hospitality. This stunningly beautiful country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, offering some of Africa's most spectacular beaches. The capital city, Dakar, wonderfully combines the old and the new, with traditional markets standing alongside trendy boutiques and modern bistros. Renowned for its music, Senegal is the land of Sabar drums and Mbalax rhythm, making it a must-visit destination for music and dance lovers. Safety:Safe

Senegal generally marked as moderately safe for solo female travelers. The culture is hospitable and friendly, but issues like petty crime, pickpocketing, and scams exist, especially in crowded areas. The cultural expectation of modest dress should also be respected. Using caution, preparing for trip by researching, and dealing with reliable local contacts significantly enhances safety.

Transport:Moderate

Senegal provides moderate ease of navigation for solo female travelers. While the urban areas, particularly Dakar, have a myriad of public transportation options, rural areas can be less accessible. French is the primary language, which may pose communication challenges for non-French speakers. Many locals are friendly and willing to assist, though women should be aware of potential safety issues, particularly at night. However, with careful planning and patience, moving around can be manageable.

Things to do:Interesting

Senegal is highly engaging with a range of activities. From vibrant markets in Dakar where you can haggle for unique crafts to the beautiful beaches in Cap Skirring, it’s a paradise for beach-lovers. Its diverse natural environment, such as Pink Lake and Niokolo-Koba National Park, offers opportunities for memorable outdoor adventures. The Maison des Esclaves on Goree Island is a poignant reminder of the country’s history. However, it can be challenging without knowledge of French or Wolof.

Food:Above average

Senegalese cuisine boasts various flavorful and nourishing dishes. It offers diversity, from fresh seafood along the coast to indigenous meals like the national dish, 'thieboudienne,' and a savory blend of flavors found in 'yassa.' Street food culture is also vibrant with a variety of fruits, vegetables, and local staples. However, adaptations to certain dietary restrictions might be challenging.

Budget:Affordable

Senegal is relatively affordable for travelers. Local food, transportation and accommodation are generally cheap. However, imported items, fine dining, and luxury hotels can be more expensive. As long as you stick to local produce and avoid tourist traps, you can manage your expenses effectively.

Group travel experience

I felt safe. I was with my best friends from high school during 3 weeks. One of my BFF married here. So we met a lot of local people, we learnt about local stories and traditions, we ate very very good specific meals. I remember all the colors, the sea of Popenguine, an incredible village at the south of Senegal, our home was settled directly on the beach, it looked like paradise.

Couple travel experience

I was there with my boyfriend and honestly, I wouldn't go there alone. I traveled solo through Europe and Asia, but if I ever had to return to Senegal, I would probably rent a car with a larger group. I also recommend learning French, as we had some difficulties communicating using only English.
