Solo Female Travel in Mauritius

Mauritius, an Indian Ocean paradise, situated off the southeast coast of Africa, is an island renowned for its stunning natural beauty, sparkling blue water, and white sandy beaches. Known for its unique biodiversity, it's the only known home to the extinct Dodo bird, and offers numerous plantations and gardens, like the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens, once famed for its giant water lilies. Mauritius bewitches travelers with its mix of cultures reflected in traditions, food, and historical architecture such as the Apravasi Ghat. Luxurious resorts, colorful markets, water sports, and colonial architecture of Port Louis, the capital city, make up the essential Mauritian experience that combines relaxation, adventure, and culture.

Safety:Safe

Mauritius is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. It has a lower crime rate compared to many other countries. However, it is important to always exercise standard precautions, such as avoiding deserted places late at night and not walking alone in poorly lit areas. Local inhabitants are typically friendly and helpful to tourists. Despite this, one should be reinsured about safety and take normal precautions, just like any other destination.

Transport:Very easy

Mauritius offers an array of local transportation options, including buses and taxis that are readily available. Key tourist spots and the airport are easily accessible. The locals are also known for being quite helpful. The main challenge could be the occasional language barrier as French and Creole are widely spoken, although English is also understood by many. The roads can be hectic and the driving style might take some getting used to if you decide to rent a car.

Things to do:Interesting

Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, offers an abundance of captivating experiences. With its stunning beaches, clear waters and vibrant marine life, snorkeling, and diving activities are extremely popular. The island is also home to lush rainforests hosting a variety of flora and fauna, where nature enthusiasts can immerse themselves in hiking and exploration. Mauritius's historic colonial towns, plantation houses, and museums provide cultural insights, while the local markets and eateries present opportunities to savor the unique and flavorful local cuisine.

Food:Excellent

The food scenario in Mauritius is nothing short of a culinary delight. It offers an extensive array of options that are a beautiful fusion of Indian, African, French, and Creole influences. Local markets are a visual treat of fresh fruits, vegetables, street foods with spices to enrich the taste. Seafood lovers will definitely enjoy their stay here, as freshly caught and prepared seafood is plenty. They also make a variety of tropical fruit drinks. The diversity of cuisines is a testament to the island's multi-ethnic heritage offering a taste that caters to almost every palate.

Budget:Moderate

Mauritius can be budget-friendly depending on the type of traveler. Accommodation ranges from affordable guesthouses to luxury resorts. Local cuisine is inexpensive and public transportation is cost-effective, but activities like water sports can run on the higher end.

Is Mauritius worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

Mauritius is beautiful and fantastic, but I would also like to warn about petty crime. Many young people are unemployed and would like to have what others have. Please be cautious, especially when walking alone, when encountering groups of young people. Keep your smartphone or other valuable items hidden. I advise avoiding deserted wild beaches. On the other hand, large urban beaches are completely safe and guarded – that's where I recommend walking and sunbathing. Another issue in Mauritius is the vast number of stray dogs that roam the beaches and streets in packs.

Solo travel experience

Although I had a good time I would not recommend traveling here solo. There are very few singles and it is not safe to walk around by yourself at night.
