Is Mauritius Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Mauritius is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. It has a lower crime rate compared to many other countries. However, it is important to always exercise standard precautions, such as avoiding deserted places late at night and not walking alone in poorly lit areas. How safe is Mauritius?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Mauritius is generally a safe country with a relatively low crime rate. However, like any other place, caution needs to be maintained, especially while walking alone at night. While it's safe in crowded, well-lit areas, some secluded or poorly-lit areas can pose safety concerns. Street Lights can be sparse in some parts, and sidewalks can sometimes disappear suddenly, so it is advisable to avoid dark alleyways or deserted beaches at night. It is always best to take a taxi for longer distances after dark, and if you're staying in a hotel, they can usually recommend a reliable one for you.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Mauritius, comprising mainly of buses and taxis, is quite reliable and generally safe to use. The drivers are usually respectful and helpful, especially towards tourists. However, it's advisable to avoid using them late at night, as some areas may be less populated and can feel uncomfortable to travel alone. Always keep an eye on your belongings and practice caution as you would anywhere else.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Mauritius is generally quite safe for solo female travelers and incidents of street harassment are relatively low. Local culture is respectful and women are mostly treated with due regard. However, like every place, some areas might be more prone to such behavior, especially during the night. Always ensure to stay aware of your surroundings and avoid secluded areas.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Mauritius maintains a fairly low risk of petty crime for travellers. Pickpocketing or bag snatching may occur, particularly in crowded areas such as markets, and thieves may operate in pairs or groups. However, most visitors experience safe and trouble-free trips when taking standard precautions. There is no prevalent risk of mugging or violent crime, but it's always necessary to remain updated on the current situation.

I traveled to Mauritius alone — it was a business trip. To be honest, I felt quite safe there. I stayed in a budget apartment for about €50 per night. It was a small apartment with access to a terrace, a shower, and a kitchenette. I highly recommend renting a car, as taxi prices are almost the same — if not exactly the same — as the daily cost of a rental car. The island is quite small. I visited several beaches, went on a tour, and swam with wild dolphins. I also took a trip to the capital, Port Louis. I didn’t have a lot of time, so most of my trip was about relaxing on the beach. There are also special tours to some of the smaller nearby islands — I definitely recommend taking one, they’re incredibly beautiful. And don’t miss the chance to try their local homemade rum — it’s very tasty and smooth.

I stayed there for a week with my friends. We stayed on airbnb apartment and only one night in a big hotel so it was really affordable that way. We made an excursion on a boat, to see an island with an old headlight, a cascade, to do scuba diving and to eat on the beach. It was awesome ! The hike of the Morne as an amazing view on all the island but can be tricky sometimes. Most of the people had a guide but it's not really necessary (coming from La Réunion island, we were used to hike from ourselves). Chamarel is really something to do ! I also liked to see an Hindu temple next to it. There are many guides all around the island but most of the time you can do all by yourself (and be careful they ask to much for what they offer sometimes), it's really a tourist trap. We did a "horse ride" on the beach in a resort in the north of the island. It was a real scam. We paid like 60€ just to make a tour of the resort and 50m on their beach with people around. Not a single real horserider would have liked it ! (Maybe it's ok for children ...) I also did a dive, but I found corals were really damaged compared to La Réunion, so I was a little bit disappointed compared to what I expected. I think it's still something to do over there ...

I went together with my mother, so 2 women. Mauritius is a very developed country, and we felt very safe. Through a Facebook group, we found local people, which are working as tour guides, and they took us all over the island. We did many activities, and the island is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. We spend a week there and we still have so much to do. We stayed in a hotel where we had breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but we were in a very good restaurant (Resto Saveur Tropical). Also during our trip we saw the main things like the underwater waterfall, the colorful earth and all the famous things. All the people are very, very friendly and welcoming. It's an island where many different culture and religions live next to each other, and as we were told by them, they celebrate every holiday together, even when it is not in their cultural believes. When you want to visit some of the beautiful and colorful temples, they are very welcoming and give you appropriate clothing. Overall, I can say that it was a very nice trip, and we both felt very safe traveling together and would always return to Mauritius.

We booked everything by ourselves mostly through booking, airport transfers were the cheapest on booking. But all trips you can find cheaper locally. Food is nice at least at our hotel as we had all inclusive. The only difference i have seen but I don't have a lot of experience with all inclusive holidays that not all the drinks were included, maybe 1/3rd of the menu is free. Overall beach was nice, we went for a day trip for west coast and south of the island. My hiking didn't happened as Le Mourne trails were closed for a month.

Mauritius is beautiful and fantastic, but I would also like to warn about petty crime. Many young people are unemployed and would like to have what others have. Please be cautious, especially when walking alone, when encountering groups of young people. Keep your smartphone or other valuable items hidden. I advise avoiding deserted wild beaches. On the other hand, large urban beaches are completely safe and guarded – that's where I recommend walking and sunbathing. Another issue in Mauritius is the vast number of stray dogs that roam the beaches and streets in packs.

Although I had a good time I would not recommend traveling here solo. There are very few singles and it is not safe to walk around by yourself at night.

Mauritius Island

Mauritius is a popular tourist destination for its beautiful nature and generally kind hospitality. However, while there are generally not too many reports of assault of any kind, at least in the major tourism spots, it is still highly possible to have uncomfortable interactions with the local men in general.

About Me

Hi there! I am Pika and I am from Mauritius Island. If you're planning to visit Mauritius after in 2026, just send me a text :)) (I'm not available before). Hotels can be really expensive if you're on a tight budget and being a broke student, I can totally relate with that. So, don't save for hotels and spend on the food, tours, and clothes instead!
