Is Tehran Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Tehran is comparatively safer than various global cities. As a woman, it's essential to adhere to local dress codes, it's legally required to wear a headscarf and modest clothing. Public transport is distant gender-segregated. Nonetheless, local ladies are often helpful to foreign women travelers. Walking around alone at night is generally safe, but as in any other city, it's advisable to take precautions and avoid deserted areas.

How safe is Tehran?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Tehran, the capital city of Iran is moderately safe for solo female travelers during the nighttime. Iran, in general, has a reputation for being quite safe for tourists compared to other regions. Traffic can be heavy and chaotic in Tehran, requiring attention when crossing streets. However, it's advisable to not walk alone after dark in quieter areas. While incidents of crime are not widespread, it is always a good practice to take standard precautions and be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Tehran, generally implies a blend of buses, metros, and taxis. Buses and metros are often crowded during peak hours but are generally safe and the most cost-effective way to commute around the city. However, giving the language barriers and cultural nuances, it can be difficult for a foreign traveler to navigate. Taxis are abundant and normally safe though drivers might not speak English. It's always ideal to have your destination written down in Farsi. Ladies' only carriages in metros/buses and women-only taxis are available and can provide a more comfortable travel setting for solo female travelers.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

Tehran as a city has mixed experiences regarding street harassment. While some travelers report that they were treated with nothing but respect, others have had instances of being stared at, followed, and unwanted attention, especially while not adhering strictly to the dress code. However, being in larger, populous areas and traveling during daylight hours tends to reduce such occurrences. Lastly, keep in mind that most locals are friendly and hospitable, eager to help or offer you tea in a genuine display of Iranian hospitality.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Tehran is generally quite safe in terms of petty crimes. Instances such as pickpocketing or purse-snatching are relatively rare, especially in crowded places such as bazaars or public transport. However, as always, it's wise to remain vigilant and take standard precautions, such as not displaying expensive belongings in public or leaving belongings unattended.

I mean, honestly it is not the best but surely,,, better than new york, Los Angeles, New Orleans, etc. I guess. Some towns and neighborhoods are not safe to walk in at night but some others are cool.

Tehran is a really crowded city, the biggest safety issue is getting cornered in darker and less crowded places in order to rob you specially mobile phones and jewelry. However, phone theft happens really often even in crowded streets or more expensive parts of the city. Most violent crimes I’ve heard of have had financial motives but personally I haven’t been sexually assaulted, but cat calling and verbal harassments happen often depending on which part of the city you’re at
