Safety:Unsafe

San Pedro Sula can be quite challenging for solo female travelers due to the high crime rates and frequent incidents of violence, specifically against women. Especially in risky areas, street harassment can be common. It's important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. Use trusted transportation services and avoid going out alone at night. Also, it is recommended to not carry expensive items with you to prevent attracting unwanted attention.

Transport:Difficult

Getting around San Pedro Sula can be somewhat challenging. While there are numerous public and private transport options, they may not be the most reliable or safe, especially for solo female travelers. The city layout can also be complicated for newcomers. It is advised to always be cautious and aware of your surroundings.

Things to do:Moderate

San Pedro Sula can offer a range of activities for a solo female traveler. It boasts stunning natural beauty, unique culinary experiences, and rich cultural heritage. You will find Cusuco National Park, an exceptional place for hiking and observing wildlife or visit the Guamilito Market for local crafts. However, it's suggested to maintain a good level of caution due to high crime rates and ensure personal safety.

Food:Above average

San Pedro Sula offers a delightful mix of traditional Honduran cuisine and international fare. Their specialties are rooted in Mayan, Lenca, and Garífuna cultures and primarily include corn, beans, and assorted tropical fruits. Local street foods like baleadas and pupusas are must-tries. For seafood lovers, coastal dishes will be satisfying. While it's not as varied as larger global cities, the quality and authenticity should satisfy most food enthusiasts. However, the options for vegetarian or vegan meals can be limited.

Budget:Moderate

San Pedro Sula, can be moderately budget-friendly. Regular expenses like food and transportation may not put too much strain on your budget. However, touring hotspots like the Cusuco National Park or the Guamilito Market could add some additional costs. Accommodation varies, with both budget and high-end options available. Be prepared for fluctuating prices and occasional splurges, especially if you're interested in tours or souvenirs.

Is San Pedro Sula worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

I never felt safe there. I was told not to wear my watch in public and not to take out my phone on the street. I only went for short walks alone, during the day, and I constantly felt uneasy.

Local tips

Although not considered a safe city by many, I never experienced something bad in the city. Not the best place to keep your phone out in public or walk alone at night. I recommend taking a taxi or a shared ride to get places. Taxis are at least L120 or around $5 for a standard trip in the city centre. Recommended ride share apps are inDriver and Uber. Taxis don’t take credit cards so make sure you have some local currency on you and always ask how much before getting in, don’t be afraid to pass if the price is too much.
