Is Honduras Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Honduras has some beautiful parts worth visiting, however safety can be a concern, particularly for solo female travelers. Major cities experience high crime rates and even though tourists are rarely targeted, street crimes, such as purse snatchings or theft, are common. Never walk around alone at night, avoid showing off valuables and always be aware of your surroundings. For a smoother travel experience, it is recommended to hire reputable tour guides for any excursions.

Safety overview

Safety at night:Unsafe

Travelling in Honduras, especially at night can be quite risky. Although tourism is encouraged, crime rate including robbery, armed assaults, and even kidnapping can be a concern. It is generally advised to avoid walking alone at night, use reliable transportation services, stay in well-populated areas, and maintain a high level of vigilance. Remember to always notify someone trustworthy about your plans and whereabouts.

Public transportation: Unsafe

Public transportation in Honduras is not the safest option, especially for solo female travelers. Buses are usually overcrowded and petty theft is common. Late night travel on public transport is particularly discouraged. Taxi services are a bit secure but it's recommended to use 'sitio' taxis booked by phone rather than hailing one from the street. Always keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Street harassment: High

Honduras, especially in urban centers and public transportation, may not always provide a comfortable travel experience. Street harassment such as catcalling or unsolicited comments can be quite common and is reported by numerous travelers. Always remember to assert yourself and walk confidently. Using local transportation or walking alone at night is generally not recommended. Frequently, local women will be open to providing additional advice or assistance regarding avoiding these issues.

Petty crimes:High

Traveling in Honduras, one needs to stay considerably cautious as it is known for a higher level of petty crime activities such as pickpocketing, bag snatching, and other forms of theft, especially in crowded areas and public transport. It's essential to maintain a low profile and avoid drawing attention to your belongings. Nevertheless, many travelers have enjoyed their journey without any issues by practicing basic safety precautions.

Tap water:Unsafe

Drinking tap water in Honduras is generally not recommended. While bottled water is widely available and recommended for consumption, the tap water can contain harmful bacteria or parasites. This might not affect local residents who are used to the water, but it can cause travelers, especially foreign travelers, to become ill.

Solo travel experience

Honduras is a beautiful country. I spent a month there. Ruins at Copan, National Parks, Utila and Roatan were my favorites. I did go all over Roatan and there is so much more to Roatan than West Bay and West End. Adventure around. I stayed at Roatan Backpackers in a private room. A container home. Awesome and cheap.

Solo travel experience

I loved Honduras and is definitely worth going to as long as you have common sense. I split my time between Copan and Roatan and felt safe in both those more touristy places. We had to travel through San Pedro Sula which I didn't feel too comfortable during that journey.

Solo travelHave you ever travelled through Honduras and Guatemala? Were you alone or with a friend?

Good morning girls :) Has any of you ever travelled through Honduras and/or Guatemala? I'm considering travelling over land from Nicaragua to Belize, but hear a lot of negative stories about safety. How did you feel when you travelled there? Were you alone or with a friend? Thanks!
