Is Azerbaijan Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Azerbaijan is generally considered a safe destination for solo female travelers. Local people are friendly and willing to help. The capital, Baku, is particularly safe with good level of police presence, clean streets and well-lit public areas. However, as with any travel, maintaining a high level of situational awareness and taking common sense precautions is necessary. There can be instances of petty crime or pick-pocketing, but violent crime is rare. It can be advisable to dress modestly due to cultural norms, particularly outside urban areas.

How safe is Azerbaijan?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Azerbaijan, notably Baku its capital, is generally safe for solo female travelers during night hours. The main areas are well-lit and patrolled, and the people are usually friendly and helpful. It is, however, always advisable to practice standard precautions such as avoiding desolate places, not accepting rides from strangers, and being aware of one's surroundings.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Azerbaijan is generally safe, with buses, trams, and metros serving as common ways for locals to get around. However, be prepared to navigate crowded conditions especially during rush hours. Female solo travelers should also pay attention to their belongings against petty theft. Taxis are also prevalent and affordable, but ensure to use official taxis with clearly displayed registration numbers for added safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Azerbaijan, particularly its capital Baku, is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. Street harassment is not prevalent, and locals are often polite and respectful. There have been isolated reports of inappropriate comments or attention, but this doesn't appear to be widespread. It’s also important to remember the local customs and dress modestly, especially when visiting more conservative rural areas. Overall, being vigilant and aware of your surroundings to ensure personal safety is always a good practice.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Azerbaijan, overall, is considered a fairly safe country for travelers. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and purse snatching do happen, particularly in crowded places and tourist areas, but on a global scale, the frequency of these incidents is relatively low. As a solo traveler, it's important to take the same common sense precautions you would anywhere, like keeping your valuable items secured and staying aware of your surroundings.

It was good; the food was amazing. I felt safe because it’s a Muslim country, and the people are good. Azerbaijan has beautiful nature, and what I love most are the food and the people. Baku is also beautiful; the night view of Baku is amazing.

Baku, Family travel

Its indeed very disappointing to say that baku is not at all safe for women at night specially women who are travelling alone. Every men around you is obnoxious and would stare you as if he is going to rape you. Day 1 till day 5 most of the men i met were very vile and bad and all they would look at you as if they would rape you even try to eve tease you and if you revolt back they would make sure you learn a lesson for pointing out the inadequate behaviour of men towards you.

Best food in the Caucasian region. I felt completely safe all the time, the people are awesome and friendly! So many things to see, I loved the carpet museum the most, but the Mini Dubai feeling is incredible too!

Azerbaijan, Couple travel

Yes, I felt safe. I stayed in a small hostel, it was very cheap but not very clean. Transportation was very simple and also cheap, so I downloaded the Bolt application for transportation. Azerbaijani food culture is very rich, I am sure you will like most of the restaurants. I went to a local restaurant called "Shirvanshah" and I liked it very much. There is also a very nice museum you can go to, its name is "Heydar Aliyev Center".

Baku, Solo travel

I arrived to Baku through Ganja because the tickets are way cheaper than reaching Baku directly. Ganja is one of the historical cities in Azerbijan and you can enjoy one day wandering around the city then to head to Baku through the train, it takes around 3 hours and it was super comfortable and I advice you to get the tickets ahead of time. In Baku I stayed in Zamzam hotel and its very affordable hotel and close to the center. In Baku I personally found Bolt the best way to move around the city as its cheap and easy to use. I recommend Azerbijan for female solo travellers because its safe and you will enjoy each moment in there. The food, places and people all were great.

Baku is stunning, pristine, well-maintained, with futuristic modern buildings and a very hospitable population. It is full of contrasts, with orthodox Muslim women on one hand, and on the other hand, there are liberal and free women dressed according to the prevailing atmosphere.

Azerbaijan, Solo travel

I spent the entire week in Baku. I stayed in two different hotels, which cost me 33 dollars and 70 dollars per night. In total, I spent about 1200 dollars for the week. I booked three full-day tours directly and paid in cash, which was much cheaper than booking online. As a woman, I traveled alone and it was safe.

I was in Azerbaijan for only a few days. I really loved the one-day trip to Gobustan (mud volcanoes, cave drawings, Yanardag, etc.) Bolt was very cheap, so I used it to get around.

Baku, Solo travel

I went to Baku alone from Tbilisi (my first solo trip) and I really enjoyed it. Overall, I felt quite safe - I was followed by a few child pickpockets on the promenade, but this phenomenon is common in many cities. A large part of Baku reminds me of Europe, with a slightly oriental touch, and everything is easy to explore on foot (I walked around on my own and it was fine). I recommend using Uber or Bolt in Baku, as taxi drivers there try to cheat people.

Baku

Overall, Baku is a safe city. If you stay in crowded areas, there’s nothing to worry about. Being alone late at night might feel a bit unsafe, but during my time living in Baku, I haven’t encountered any negative situations.

Baku

I think Baku is safe. People are harmless. They dont will hurt you physically. But maybe you can face some aggressive ones. Thats okey. They still cannot do anything to you. Other people always there for helping you about problems. You can ask questions on streets.

About Me

I've always been someone who loves pushing my limits and trying new things. One of the most thrilling experiences I've had was skydiving – the rush of jumping out of a plane and free-falling was indescribable! I've also tried bungee jumping, which was equally exciting. I have a deep appreciation for nature, so I often go camping and hiking, immersing myself in the great outdoors. Besides, I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and trying new foods, which has enriched my life with diverse experiences and perspectives. These adventures have taught me a lot about myself and the world around me, and I'm always excited for the next opportunity to try something new.
