Is Zanzibar City Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Zanzibar City is generally safe for solo female travelers. The locals are friendly and respect tourists, but like anywhere, it's best to stay cautious and aware. Stick to well-travelled areas and avoid empty streets, particularly at night. Dress modestly to respect the local Islamic culture. The city is not crime-free so protect your valuables and watch out for pickpockets specially in crowded areas. Always arrange secure transportation with reliable sources.

How safe is Zanzibar City?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Zanzibar City, especially areas like Stone Town, can be reasonably safe at night. However, as with any place, solo female travelers should exercise some caution. Most locals are friendly and helpful but it's always best to avoid less crowded and poorly lit areas. Using reliable taxi services at night instead of walking may also be a safer option.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Zanzibar City is generally reliable, but caution is always advised. The primary form of public transportation is the local minibus known as 'dala dala'. While these are affordable, they can often be crowded and with inadequate safety measures. Taxis are also available but ensure they are registered ones to avoid scam. Always take care of your belongings due to pickpockets activities. Overall, while safety is not a major concern, some unpredictable variables should be mindful of.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Moderate

In Zanzibar City, understanding local customs and dressing modestly is key. Covering your shoulders and knees is generally expected, and doing so can help decrease unwanted attention. However, despite this, you may still encounter occasional catcalls or comments from local men, especially on the more crowded streets. Mostly observed as harmless, but sometimes they can appear aggressive which might make you uncomfortable. Foreign female tourists are the common subjects of such encounters. Offering a firm 'no' or ignoring can resolve the situation most of the time. Street harassment is not rampant, but it does exist.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Zanzibar City has a generally safe atmosphere for tourists. However, minor crimes like pickpocketing can take place, particularly in crowded areas such as markets or during festivals. It is not rampant but one should still exercise caution and keep personal belongings secure just in case.

Is Zanzibar City safe for women?

I’ve felt very safe here as have many of my friends who have travelled or lived here previously. There are some issues with overly forward men, but ultimately they take no for an answer which is better than what I can say about North America.

About Me

I am a 26 year old international development and climate action practitioner in Zanzibar until the end of April. Like your dream boyfriend, I love long walks on the beach, exploring this beautiful island, and trying everything. My main hobbies (at least in Canada) involve live music, yoga, and reading. I got a Kindle right before leaving and it’s become my best friend. I’m a yes woman and am excited to meet other people here!
