Is South Sudan safe for solo female travelers?

Traveling to South Sudan as a solo female traveller carries a considerable degree of risk. The country is currently unstable due to ongoing political instability and conflict. Safety conditions can quickly change, and violence, including gender-based violence, occurs frequently. There is a high degree of risk from crime, such as armed robbery. Infrastructure is severely lacking, making transportation and communication burdensome. Comprehensive travel and medical insurance is an absolute necessity, and you should also register with your embassy upon arrival if you have the necessity of travelling there despite the conditions.

Torit, Solo travel

Torit was relatively stable but the whole country of South Sudan felt pretty precarious at the time of my visit in 2013-2014. There weren't a lot of exciting views or activities within town but the mountain villages are gorgeous. I enjoyed the simplicity of life, and the heat, the people's humour, resilience and eager friendliness. Mango season is the best time of year in Torit. Papaya, Guava and Jackfruit are also available locally. Not a place to visit for the faint of heart, I will warn....
