How safe is Ometepe?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Ometepe is a fairly safe place, especially during the daytime; however, the safety level can decrease after dark mainly due to limited lighting and less crowded streets. While walking alone at night is not typically dangerous, it is still advised to stay cautious, avoid secluded areas and use reliable modes of transportation when possible.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Ometepe's public transportation, primarily buses, are generally reliable and used often by locals and tourists alike. However, they can be crowded, and services are less frequent during the evening and weekends. While serious incidents are rare, it's wise to keep personal belongings close due to occasional pickpocketing.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Ometepe is generally considered safe and it's quite common to see solo female travelers in the area. Street harassment is not a major issue as residents tend to be friendly and welcoming. However, just like anywhere else in the world, it's always a good idea to stay vigilant and observe common safety precautions, such as avoiding isolated areas and not walking alone at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Ometepe is generally known to be safe for travelers and has a relatively low incidence of petty crimes such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching. Because of the island's small, close-knit community where everyone knows each other, crime levels are kept to a minimum. However, you should still exercise general caution. Don't leave your belongings unattended because occasional incidents can occur, especially when they tempt potential thieves.
Tap water:

Tap water:Unsafe

In Ometepe, tap water is not considered safe to drink for travelers. The locals might have developed a resistance to potential bacteria in the water, however, travelers are recommended to opt for bottled water. Is Ometepe worth visiting?

Solo travel experience

I stayed at Zopilote, a very cheap and lovely hostel. At first I wanted to do some volunteer work, which is great if you love the free and relaxed vibe for a couple of weeks. The hostel ended up being so cheap I didn’t do any volunteering and just payed my stay, which also allowed me to join all the lovely acitvities they offer like yoga, cacao ceremonies, breathwork, … I went alone but met so many great people there who were lovely and open minded and a lot of other solo travellers which is always nice to meet new people.
