Is Chisinau Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. Like any large city, it does have some issues with petty crime such as bag-snatching and pickpocketing, especially in crowded public areas, but these are typically no worse than in any other major city worldwide. Steps like keeping an eye on your belongings at all times and avoiding isolated areas at night can mitigate most risks. Violent crime is rare and police response is efficient. Furthermore, people are quite friendly and willing to help if needed.

How safe is Chisinau?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Chisinau generally has a peaceful ambiance, but it is advised not to walk alone at night, particularly in poorly lit or deserted areas. The main areas are relatively safe, with the occasional petty crime like pickpocketing or scams. Public transportation and taxis are available for nighttime commuting. Before traveling, it's always advised to follow basic safety precautions like being mindful of your belongings and avoiding any suspicious activity.

In general, Chisinau tends to have a respectful community where street harassment is not particularly widespread or common. Locals are typically quite friendly and helpful to tourists. However, it is always advisable to stay cautious and follow general safety measures like avoiding deserted or very less populated areas, especially during the night. Stick to the main streets and public places where other people are present. As anywhere else, occasional unwanted attention may can occur, but it is not a prominent issue in Chisinau.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Moderate

In Chisinau, petty crimes like pickpocketing and theft can occur especially in crowded areas such as public transportation and popular tourist sites. While such situations are not extremely common, it's advisable to be vigilant about your belongings and surroundings at all times.

Only one incident of verbal harassment, and by young men, but likely because my female friend and I snuck a kiss on the escalator in the mall. Luckily I don't understand most Russian, so I just smiled.. she cursed at them 🤣

I lived there for 20 years. Tbh this town of eastern Europe makes me feel safer than the french town I live in. I often walked in Chisinau on late nights, literally crossing the whole capital by foot and never had any bad situation (I guess lucky me). Police also have cameras on them, which french police doesn't have unfortunately. If you're in the center or around I would say you're pretty safe.

About me

Hi everyone. I love traveling, but I can't say I'm the most active person)) The quiet places are for me, nature, green, mountains. Sure, there is much to see in the city, but for me it's few days, not more)) I'll rather spend an evening watching a beautiful sunset, then spend a night in a club.
