How safe is Surabaya?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Surabaya is generally safe, but like any city, it has areas that are safer than others. Walking alone at night is acceptable in busy, well-lit areas where there are plenty of people around. However, it is advisable to take precautions such as avoiding deserted streets, keeping your belongings close, and being aware of your surroundings to ensure your safety. Public transportation and reliable taxi services are available for a safer alternative.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Moderate

Public transportation in Surabaya is relatively secure for female travelers. City transportation includes a variety of modes like taxis, ride-hailing apps like Grab or Go-Jek, and local buses. Buses are often crowded and less comfortable, while taxis and ride-hailing apps are generally found to be safer. However, just as in any other city in the world, vigilance is advised especially during off-peak hours or in less touristy areas. Always check that the meter is on in your taxi and stay connected with someone locally whenever possible for added safety.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Surabaya, harassment incidents are relatively low in comparison to other areas. The local community is generally respectful and adheres to traditional values. However, being a multicultural city, it is advisable to maintain some level of caution and adhere to local customs and dress codes. Always consider safety precautions such as avoiding deserted areas late at the night, being aware of your surroundings, and not entertaining unwanted attention.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Surabaya, like most Indonesian cities, is generally safe with a minimal risk for petty crimes such as pickpocketing or scams. Nonetheless, it's always good to stay vigilant, especially in crowded places and public transportation. As in any travel situation, don't flash valuable items or large amounts of cash.

Moderately safe especially if you're in a busy area, but cat call and verbal harassment can happen a lot for women walking on the street. When it's night and the street is still busy it's relatively safe. But when it turn into midnight and the street is quiet be careful! I wouldn't recommend walking alone in this situation.
