Is Merauke safe for solo female travelers?

Merauke generally welcomes tourists with open arms. It's a peaceful town with friendly locals. The crime rate is lower than in many other major tourist cities in Indonesia. It is safe to move around alone during the day but caution is advised after dark, especially in less crowded areas. However, like any other place, it's recommended for female solo travelers to remain vigilant at all times, stick to populated areas, obey local rules and customs and avoid giving personal information to strangers.
