Is Suva Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Suva generally has a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, however, as a solo female traveler, basic precautions should be advised. While local residents are largely respectful, it may be wise to avoid isolated areas, particularly after dark, to ensure personal safety. Be aware of the possibility of petty crimes such as pickpocketing or theft. It's always beneficial to stay in well-lit, populated areas and keep your belongings close to you at all times.

How safe is Suva?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Suva, the capital of Fiji, is generally safe during daylight hours but caution should still be exercised at night. It is recommended to avoid walking alone at night especially in the central business district. While some neighborhoods are safer than others, it's always best to use a taxi or private transportation service after dark. Locals and tourists alike are advised to be watchful of their surroundings and personal belongings. Despite that, incidents of serious crime are relatively low in Fiji but it's still wise to take precautionary measures when travelling at night.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Suva generally offers reliable public transportation, including buses, mini buses, and taxis, with most drivers being respectful and friendly. However, as with any location, staying alert and cautious is necessary, especially during off-peak hours. Taxis are a very common mode of transportation, and usually safer since they double as tour guides. Buses are also an option, but can sometimes be crowded during rush hours.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

While Suva is a city that is generally considered safe for women, it does experience occasional street harassment. It is mostly in the form of catcalls or whistling, and usually doesn't escalate beyond that. The locals are friendly and protective, and they take actions when situations go out of hand. However, as with any location, it is advisable to exercise vigilance especially at late hours and in secluded locations. Dress modestly to respect local customs and avoid unwanted attention.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

While Suva is generally considered as relatively safe, it is not completely free of petty crime. Travelers might encounter occasional instances of non-violent crimes such as pick-pocketing or bag-snatching, particularly in crowded places. However, with basic precautions and staying alert, these incidents can mostly be avoided. Please note that this assessment could fluctuate depending on ongoing circumstances and specific areas within the city.
Tap water:

Tap water:Moderate

The quality of tap water in Suva varies from place to place. While some areas have access to treated water that is generally safe to drink, there are also less urbanized areas where the water is not treated to the same extent and may not be safe to consume without purification. Therefore, it is recommended to either boil the tap water, use sterilization tablets, or drink bottled water to ensure safety.

Is Suva safe to travel?

Is Suva safe for women?

This is from the lens of a bi-racial lighter skin woman that moved grew up in Suva and most recently lived there in 2019. Daytime vs nighttime are very different in the Suva area. During the day I feel completely safe walking and taking public transport by myself. At night, I would not recommend walking alone outside of the busy or central areas and if you are taking a taxi, make note of the drivers plates and don’t take a non-metered ride. If you want to go to a bar or club, try to stay to the main locations such as Traps or O’Reilly’s. If you’re going out to a bar or club leave expensive items at home, I have had my phone stolen multiple times. Overall, I do feel safe by myself but I do worry about being robbed at night, but outside of the average woman’s fear of sexual violence - I do not worry about that as much vs materialistic things being stolen.
