Is Fiji Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Fiji is generally considered safe for solo female travelers. The locals are typically friendly and welcoming, violence is fairly low, and the majority of the areas that tourists frequent are well-regulated. However, like with all destinations, it's recommended to remain vigilant, especially during night time or when visiting isolated areas. Making sure not to accept unsolicited offers and always using official taxi services is advisable.

How safe is Fiji?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Moderate

Walking alone at night in Fiji can be iffy. Like any place, safety can largely depend on your location. Urban areas like Suva tend to have more street lights and people around, which might make you feel a bit safer. Nonetheless, petty crime such as pickpocketing and purse-snatching does increase after dark, especially in the popular Nadi and Suva tourist areas. It's best to avoid isolated areas and to tread with caution after dark or consider using private transportation. Always trust your instincts and don't put your safety at risk.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Fiji, primarily buses, is generally safe and reliable. Tourists often use this form of transport without many issues. Taxis are also plentiful. However, it is advisable to use licensed taxis, preferably those arranged by your hotel. Also, be sure to negotiate the fare before the trip starts. At night, it is typically safer to opt for taxis over buses. Always remember general safety measures such as not flashing expensive items and keeping close tabs on your belongings.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

In Fiji, the locals are generally very respectful towards women, and the culture overall discourages harassment. While it's not completely unheard of, it is significantly lower compared to several other destinations. As always, it is important to take standard safety precautions, such as avoiding unlit, isolated areas at night and being aware of your surroundings. It's also advisable to understand some cultural norms to minimize any misunderstanding.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Petty crimes, such as pickpocketing or bag-snatching, are relatively low in Fiji. However, it's worthwhile staying cautious, especially in crowded places and urban centers. Always keep an eye on your belongings and maintain common sense safety measures as you would do in any country.

Fiji, Solo travel

I felt safe and the people were very kind. As a solo female traveller I couldn’t recommend this beautiful island enough ! Lots of activities and sights to see as well as stunning crystal clear water to splash about in.

Fiji, Family travel

An amazing place to go alone, as a couple or with family. Delicious food, incredible sunsets, lots of activities or enjoy swim up pool bars, palm trees and relaxing in a hammock. I’m lucky to have been many times. It’s affordable with friendly locals and wonderful tropical island culture. Only 3hrs from NZ and no time change… perfect for children. Can stay in fun, family hotels with everything, or have a romantic, quiet getaway with a loved one. Very safe for travelling alone, everyone is warm and welcoming!

Fiji, Solo travel

Although cliche I don’t recommend walking alone at night as I did encounter some strange people. Majority of the locals are amazing and always glad to help and super sweet. I do recommend visiting local villages, when doing so ensure your knees aren’t showing nor your shoulders. Although they will always have clothes to borrow if needed. Seeing an authentic village helps put into perspective the true beauty of Fiji.

Fiji, Family travel

Hey so my family is originally from Fiji so I go back quite a lot! I can safely say that I absolutely love Fiji and because the dollar is so good, everything in Fiji becomes a ton cheaper I think there’s a great mix of things to do both for someone who wants to relax and someone who wants thrills The only thing I’ll mention is at night, outside of the main resort island (Denarau) it can be a bit dangerous if you’re not careful

Fiji, Solo travel

I stayed in Fiji for a month and apart from the tourist areas, it was very cheap there. I spent most of my stay in Sigatoka. Public transportation was safe and incredibly cheap. I felt much safer in smaller towns than in big cities.

Is Fiji safe for women?

Fiji

As a typical tourist — staying at a tourist spot or hotel region is incredibly safe. I left another more detailed safety review for Suva City - as it is different from the upscale tourist areas. Petty theft is common so be careful when leaving the resort area. If you are staying on the resort property I would not worry outside of the usual precautions.

Suva

This is from the lens of a bi-racial lighter skin woman that moved grew up in Suva and most recently lived there in 2019. Daytime vs nighttime are very different in the Suva area. During the day I feel completely safe walking and taking public transport by myself. At night, I would not recommend walking alone outside of the busy or central areas and if you are taking a taxi, make note of the drivers plates and don’t take a non-metered ride. If you want to go to a bar or club, try to stay to the main locations such as Traps or O’Reilly’s. If you’re going out to a bar or club leave expensive items at home, I have had my phone stolen multiple times. Overall, I do feel safe by myself but I do worry about being robbed at night, but outside of the average woman’s fear of sexual violence - I do not worry about that as much vs materialistic things being stolen.
