Close to the iconic geothermal Myvatn Lake and the dramatic Godafoss Waterfall, Akureyri is a perfect base for nature-loving travelers, making it one of Iceland's top tourism destinations. Its cozy cafes, mouthwatering local cuisine, and unique Nordic architecture add to the warm, inviting ambiance of a town which, despite its small size, leaves a grand impression.

I recommend whale watching on a floater, taking the Diamond Circle tour, and rafting on the nearby Whitewater River. My hostel overlooked a lively street with hot dog stands (overpriced), a bakery (worth a visit), and other food shops. I stayed in a capsule bed that allowed privacy.
