Montevideo is a quiet city. Due to poverty, it is quite normal that you might get robbed in the outskirts of the capital. But beyond that, it is a small and peaceful city unlike the large capitals that surround it.

Generally it’s safe here and usually I don’t feel worried about safety. But sometimes I see news about crime and hear stories about people being robbed. I think you need to research about city districts if you come here because some of them are safe and some are not. And it’s better stay away from district called centro especially at nights and weekends.

Montevideo is safe for u to walk alone during most of the day, at night I would avoid certain areas like Ciudad Vieja or streets with no lights or houses. Stay alert and take care of yourself but overall it's a safe city to visit, there's no pickpocketing or street robbery, u can take pictures with your phone and it won't be stolen. Buses are very safe for u, also taxis or Uber. People will be very nice if u need some guidance trying to get somewhere, so nice they're capable of walking u there so u don't get lost!

It would depend on the neighborhood you’re visiting and how you’re looking, let’s say you’re wearing some fine sunnies and you have all your tech equipment visible all the time and you’re carrying your camera around, well you may caught some attention and you’re going to want to get more aware of all your stuff, there’s that..

It is quite a safe place, especially if you are accompanied. Although there is crime, the main issue is home burglaries and such. Violent assaults or kidnappings of women are not common. I have been living in the capital (Montevideo) for 4 years, and I have only been robbed once. I have never experienced any kind of abuse on the street more than the "normal": people shout things at me on the street or touch me on public transportation.

The most common thing in Montevideo are the robberies, and people can hurt you if you refuse to give your things. But you'll be safe if you avoid certain neighbourhoods. Sexual harassment such as truck drivers catcalling are a common thing, although I noticed them way more when I was younger and wearing my school uniform 🤮 You can safely use public transport, but try to go to more bussy bus stops if it's nighttime (again, because of the robberies). Overall, I think Montevideo is pretty safe and other towns in Uruguay are even more.
Posted: August 19, 2024Montevideo is safe in general terms. But each neighborhood is different and some are much more dangerous than others. Just be careful and don’t walk alone during the night ! And be careful with your things; phone get stolen all the time:
Posted: July 23, 2024Not the safest after dark, but during the day it’s fairly safe (depending on the e neighbourhood of course). Public transport is safe, so no problem with that, but watch out at places like bus stops at night.
Posted: June 8, 2024I believe I am safe. Although there are robberies and crimes in many places across Latin America, these areas are far from other unsafe places in the world.
Posted: March 23, 2024I went alone for a weekend to Montevideo from Buenos Aires and it was wonderful. It's a very peaceful city. I visited a Sunday market, walked along the riverbank and drank mate. It was charming. And very easy, thanks to the use of the Buquebus ferry. I didn't feel unsafe at all.

Hey there! I’m Romi. I’m 33, live with my cat Eme. Studied social work and sex education. I have multiple jobs but still find the time for me and social activities. I’m a fan of yoga and currently trying with calistenia exercises. Ooh I also love nails, I’m kind of a manicurist, or at least trying to. I love meeting new people, languages and cultures, never get bored of listening and sharing experiences, coffee or wine and long talks are one of my favorites activities. Activities outdoors I definitely enjoy, getting to know new places to eat, walking at the rambla, and of course going to the beach.
